F.; Memoirs of the World War This book is not intended for general circulation, but for distribution among the members and friends of Berean, that it may be preserved for their children who in turn may know of the part played by this church in the great World War. How that for two years a loyal church and people carried on, while their leader and loved ones were fighting "Over There" that all men might be "Up," not "Some Men Down." To preserve intact the letters that the pastor wrote during the lull of battle, or while resting on the march toward the Rhine, and thus acquaint the folks at home of the hopes and fears, the joys and sorrows of their sons and husbands, as they marched toward victory. We claim no literary genius for this book. It is not written as a treatise on the war - but a simple narration of facts pertaining to the part played by the men of the 8th (370th) U. S. Infantry, composed largely of men from Berean Baptist Church and Congregation. In my brief address to the many good sports who may peruse my book, I am going to do nothing of the kind. If the old stories of the Ring I have attempted to invest with new interest fail to hold the reader spellbound, it is no fault of mine, so I make no apology, for the material has been culled from many sources, and the fabric is a patchwork, and nothing more nor less. To show temerity or shyness in the preface of a work upon Prize-Fighting would be out of place; so I simply ask my readers to take it for what it is worth. Books there are upon the noble art which many have read. "Boxiana," by Pierce Egan, and published in the early part of last century; "Pugilistica," a complete series from old "Bell's Life," by our old friend Miles, who was one of the contributors to the Licensed Victuallers' Gazette in its earliest days; together with "Fistiana," simply a rather imperfect record of the Ring, are the only works that have been published on the subject. I claim that these two volumes treat more exhaustively of our fistic champions than any of the books published heretofore. One battle between two men standing before each other with the naked fists is very like another, and I am sure that without some accompaniment concerning the times the craftiest penman would find a difficulty in holding the reader's interest through two stout volumes like these before him. Edwards and the Yankee Division will ever remain in intimate and loving association. This fighting gen eral of the regular army organized the Division and took it overseas. He conducted the training which moulded it into a combat division of the highest class. He commanded it at chemin-des-dames, at Toul, at chateau-thierry and the Second Battle of the Marne, at St. Mihiel, and on the Meuse and at Verdun, until the final fort night which preceded the Armistice. He was more than a friend, he was a father to his boys, and they knew him as such and asa leader of rare military skill. It IS going was a great grief to them.
