The Distribution and Significance of Scleroderris Disease in Ontario
Author: Anthony Arthur Hopkin
Publisher: Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 24
Book Description
Scleroderris canker, caused by the fungus Gremmeniella abietina (Lagerb.) Morelet, has been regarded as a major pest of pine for over 30 years. The North American race of scleroderris is associated with numerous pine planting failures in Ontario since the 1950s, while the European race has been restricted by an aggressive system of detection and sanitation. The purpose of this document is to report on the distribution and significance of scleroderris canker in Ontario since the introduction of the European race, first isolated in Canada in 1978. The report describes the life cycle and epidemiology of the fungus, methods of scleroderris control, and methods and materials used to detect scleroderris and identify the race. It then provides maps of Gremmeniella abietina distribution in central Ontario for various time periods, with relevant discussion.

Author: James Peter Brandt
Publisher: Canadian Forest Service, Northern Forestry Centre
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 52
Book Description
Summarizes 1996 results of forest health monitoring activities in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories, based on assessments made on 17 permanent biomonitoring plots and assessments of major forest disturbances. Brief descriptions are given of major forest disturbances in the region, including forest tent caterpillar defoliation, lodgepole pine dwarf mistletoe infestation, spruce budworm defoliation, and forest fires. Current climatic data from across the region are compared to 30-year normals for a number of parameters. Details of the assessments completed on the 17 permanent biomonitoring plots are also presented, and the state of regeneration on the plots is discussed. In addition, the current status of quarantine pests in Canada of concern to the forestry sector is described.
