Fluid Machinery, 1993
A Mathematical Introduction to Fluid Mechanics
Author: A. J. Chorin
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468400827
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 213
Book Description
These notes are based on a one-quarter (i. e. very short) course in fluid mechanics taught in the Department of Mathematics of the University of California, Berkeley during the Spring of 1978. The goal of the course was not to provide an exhaustive account of fluid mechanics, nor to assess the engineering value of various approxima tion procedures. The goals were: (i) to present some of the basic ideas of fluid mechanics in a mathematically attractive manner (which does not mean "fully rigorous"); (ii) to present the physical back ground and motivation for some constructions which have been used in recent mathematical and numerical work on the Navier-Stokes equations and on hyperbolic systems; (iil. ) 'to interest some of the students in this beautiful and difficult subject. The notes are divided into three chapters. The first chapter contains an elementary derivation of the equations; the concept of vorticity is introduced at an early stage. The second chapter contains a discussion of potential flow, vortex motion, and boundary layers. A construction of boundary layers using vortex sheets and random walks is presented; it is hoped that it helps to clarify the ideas. The third chapter contains an analysis of one-dimensional gas iv flow, from a mildly modern point of view. Weak solutions, Riemann problems, Glimm's scheme, and combustion waves are discussed. The style is informal and no attempt was made to hide the authors' biases and interests.

ISBN: 9780849320156
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 380
Book Description
Fluid Machinery: Performance, Analysis, and Design provides a comprehensive introduction to the fluid mechanics of turbomachinery. By focusing on the preliminary design and selection of equipment to meet a set of performance specifications-including size, noise, and cost limitations-the author promotes a basic but thorough understanding of the subject. His pragmatic approach exposes students to a realistic array of conflicting requirements and real-world industrial applications, while providing a solid background for more advanced study. Coveriage of both gas and hydraulic turbines and emphasis on industrial issues and equipment makes this book ideal for mechanical engineering students. Fluid Machinery uses extensive illustration, examples, and exercises to prepare students to confront industrial applications with confidence.

Experiments in Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics
Author: Robert Alan Granger
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521449250
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 304
Book Description
Engineering curricula are notoriously demanding. One way to make the material easier to grasp and more fun to learn is to emphasize the experimental or "hands-on" aspects of engineering problems. This unique book is about learning through active participation in laboratory experiments, and it specifically aims to dispel some of the mystery so many students associate with the study of thermodynamics and heat transfer. In it, the author presents a collection of experiments in heat transfer and thermodynamics contributed by leading engineering educators. The experiments have been tested, evaluated, and proved successful for classroom use. Each experiment follows the same step-by-step format, which includes the objective of the experiment, apparatus needed, procedure, suggested headings, and references. The experiments use apparatus that is easily built or attainable. Among the topics covered are heat conduction, convection, boiling, mixing, diffusion, radiation, heat pipes and exchangers, and thermodynamics. The book will be especially useful as a companion to standard heat transfer and thermodynamics texts.

Fluid Machinery
Author: Terry Wright
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1420082949
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 456
Book Description
Published nearly a decade ago, Fluid Machinery: Performance, Analysis, and Design quickly became popular with students, professors, and professionals because of its comprehensive and comprehensible introduction to the fluid mechanics of turbomachinery. Renamed to reflect its wider scope and reorganized content, this second edition provides a more logical flow of information that will enhance understanding. In particular, it presents a consistent notation within and across chapters, updating material when appropriate. Although the authors do account for the astounding growth in the field of computational fluid dynamics that has occurred since publication of the first edition, this text emphasizes traditional "one-dimensional" layout and points the way toward using CFD for turbomachinery design and analysis. Presents Extensive Examples and Design Exercises to Illustrate Performance Parameters and Machine Geometry By focusing on the preliminary design and selection of equipment to meet performance specifications, the authors promote a basic yet thorough understanding of the subject. They cover topics including gas and hydraulic turbines and equipment that is widely used in the industry, such as compressors, blowers, fans, and pumps. This book promotes a pragmatic approach to turbomachinery application and design, examining a realistic array of difficulties and conflicting requirements. The authors use examples from a broad range of industrial applications to illustrate the generality of the basic design approach and the common ground of seemingly diverse areas of application. With a variety of illustrations, examples, and exercises that emphasize real-world industrial applications, this book not only prepares students to face industrial applications with confidence, but also supplies professionals with a compact and easy-to-use reference.

ISBN: 0080868908
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 412
Book Description
Written primarily to provide petroleum engineers with a systematic analytical approach to the solution of fluid flow problems, this book will nevertheless be of interest to geologists, hydrologists, mining-, mechanical-, or civil engineers. It provides the knowledge necessary for petroleum engineers to develop design methods for drilling, production, transport of oil and gas. Basic mechanical laws are applied for perfect fluid flow, Newtonian fluid, non-Newtonian fluid, and multiple phase flows. Elements of gas dynamics, a non-familiar treatment of shock waves, boundary layer theory, and two-phase flow are also included.
