Book Description
"The overall aim of this manual is to improve and increase the amount and accuracy of catch data provided by deep-bottom snapper fishers in the Pacific Islands region, when they complete their catch and effort logsheets (and to encourage those who do not complete logsheets to start doing so). It will enable fishers to more accurately identify the fish they catch and to record species previously not recorded because they did not know what they were, or considered them insignificant or irrelevant. The manual is presented in eight tabbed sections for ease of use. Each section starts with a list of the species covered in the section, with the scientific and standard FAO English and French names -- when there was no FAO name for a species, the authors retained the name most commonly used in the Pacific Islands region -- and the FAO species code to be used by fishers when completing their logsheets. Within each species group, species that may be hard to distinguish have been presented on opposite or adjoining pages to make identification easier"--Publication's home page

Deep-Sea Fishes
Author: Imants G. Priede
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316033457
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 513
Book Description
The technological advances of the last twenty years have brought huge advances in our understanding of the deep sea and of the species inhabiting this elusive and fascinating environment. Synthesising the very latest research and discoveries, this is a comprehensive and much-needed account of deep-sea fishes. Priede examines all aspects of this incredibly diverse group of animals, reviewing almost 3,500 species and covering deep-sea fish evolution, physiology and ecology as well as charting the history of their discovery from the eighteenth century to the present day. Providing a global account of both pelagic and demersal species, the book ultimately considers the effect of the growing deep-sea fishing industry on sustainability. Copiously illustrated with explanations of the deep-sea environment, drawings of fishes and information on how they adapt to the deep, this is an essential resource for biologists, conservationists, fishery managers and anyone interested in marine evolution and natural history.

Fish Identification Tools for Biodiversity and Fisheries Assessments
Author: Johanne Fischer
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO)
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 120
Book Description
This review provides an appraisal of existing, state-of-the-art fish identification (ID) tools (including some in the initial stages of their development) and shows their potential for providing the right solution in different real-life situations. The ID tools reviewed are: Use of scientific experts (taxonomists) and folk local experts, taxonomic reference collections, image recognition systems, field guides based on dichotomous keys; interactive electronic keys (e.g. IPOFIS), morphometrics (e.g. IPez), scale and otolith morphology, genetic methods (Single nucleotide polymorphisms [SNPs] and Barcode [BOL]) and Hydroacoustics. The review is based on the results and recommendations of the workshop "Fish Identification Tools for Fishery Biodiversity and Fisheries Assessments," convened by FAO FishFinder and the University of Vigo and held in Vigo, Spain, from 11 to 13 October 2011. It is expected that it will help fisheries managers, environmental administrators and other end users to select the best available species identification tools for their purposes.--

Habitats and Biota of the Gulf of Mexico: Before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
Author: C. Herb Ward
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1493934562
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 948
Book Description
This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license. The Gulf of Mexico is an open and dynamic marine ecosystem rich in natural resources but heavily impacted by human activities, including agricultural, industrial, commercial and coastal development. The Gulf of Mexico has been continuously exposed to petroleum hydrocarbons for millions of years from natural oil and gas seeps on the sea floor, and more recently from oil drilling and production activities located in the water near and far from shore. Major accidental oil spills in the Gulf are infrequent; two of the most significant include the Ixtoc I blowout in the Bay of Campeche in 1979 and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010. Unfortunately, baseline assessments of the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before these spills either were not available, or the data had not been systematically compiled in a way that would help scientists assess the potential short-term and long-term effects of such events. This 2-volume series compiles and summarizes thousands of data sets showing the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Volume 2 covers historical data on commercial and recreational fisheries, with an analysis of marketing trends and drivers; ecology, populations and risks to birds, sea turtles and marine mammals in the Gulf; and diseases and mortalities of fish and other animals that inhabit the Gulf of Mexico.
