Book Description
Excerpt from First French Reading Lessons Were this small book a "Reader" and nothing more - were it merely a certain number of selections taken from the works of the best modern French authors, having annotations, whenever difficult passages occur - in short, were it so much French to be translated into English, we should feel called upon to apologize for introducing another text-book on the French language in the American market. This work is not a Reader, but a substitute for readers. However important translation may be to the student, it is when reading is first attempted, a matter of much less importance than the proper study of certain features of the language through other means than the grammar. What is the actual aim in view when the student makes a first attempt at reading? It should be: the means of acquiring a vocabulary; of fixing in the mind the grammatical principles already studied; of getting an insight into the genius of the language; and finally, of beginning to speak French. How much of all this is usually accomplished with the numerous "French Readers?" It is safe to say that at least two very important features of the language have been much neglected in "Readers." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Book Description
Excerpt from First Book in French: Or a Practical Introduction to Reading, Writing, and Speaking the French Language Although this little book can very well be dispensed with by persons passed their childhood, yet it is believed that learners generally will find their satisfaction in the study increased, and their ultimate proficiency advanced, by commencing with it. Those, also, who find it neces sary, in a short time, to obtain such an acquaintance with the language as may be of practical use, without master ing the whole grammar, will find this book the best fitted for their purpose. Although containing but sixty-four short and simple lessons, it teaches all those principles of the language which are the most commonly used in conversation; and he who has studied it thoroughly can communicate his ideas orally in the language, and make his way in French society with little feeling of incon venience. Book Description
Excerpt from First Year French For Young Beginners It is hoped that the Exercises appended to each Lesson will provide ample drill; no retranslation exercises have been given; frequent dictations from the readings, and later, viva-voce te translations of the text from the teacher's English appear more suitable for very young children. To every reading have been appended a few lines for com mittal to memory: they are always illustrative either of the grammar or of the pronunciation drill of the lesson. It remains to be said that the attempt to deal with grammar and pronunciation on parallel lines has necessarily resulted in some want of logical sequence with regard both to the one and to the other; the compromise arrived at is largely experimental, and the writer will welcome both criticism and suggestions for improvements. Book Description
Excerpt from French by Reading: A Progressive French Method Tim one point to be kept ever in view, in teaching French by this method, is to make the study easy. The pupil's mind should never be needlessly diverted from the main purpose, that of thinking in French, by any avoidable perplexity, either as to the meaning of a phrase or as to the grammatical principles which govern it. The vocabulary which is to give form to the thought is always the first consideration, and it is to be attained by the easiest and most rapid means possible. The grammatical rules are in every case to explain the form, never to precede it. In the case of very young pupils, therefore, it is desirable that even the notes explanatory of the lesson should be given by the teacher orally, rather than read by the pupil. In no case are they intended to be learned. The grammatical rules, on the contrary, are to be learned, and learned perfectly; but not until the reading lesson has been gone over at least once, - in the case of young children, twice. The method of study should, therefore, be as follows. First, the reading of the text of the lesson, with the interlinear translation, as far as it exists; after that, the text is to be read in class, without prep aration, the teacher supplying the English meaning of all new words. The second lesson should consist of the same text, prepared before hand by the aid of the Vocabulary at the end of the book (which contains only those translations of the word required by the book), and of the grammatical references, if needed. The third lesson should consist of the large type of the grammar lesson, thoroughly committed to memory, and a third reading of the text, at sight. In a class of older children, after the first nine lessons, two repetitions of the text should be sufficient, the grammar study accompanying the second repetition.
