Book Description
Excerpt from Gas Analysis as an Aid in Fighting Mine Fires In the early stages of a mine fire effort is directed toward fighting it at close range by using water from buckets, hose, or portable extinguishers or by loading out' the hot coal. Frequently-this effort is not successful, and the mine or a section of it is sealed in order to smother the fire. Some fires gain such headway that the entire mine has to be flooded. This expedient, though effective, requires the use of an enormous quantity of water, not always easily obtained, and a subsequent expenditure of much money and time in draining the mine and putting it in working order.
