Book Description
Understanding the reproductive physiology and endocrinology of fishes is essential for captive maturation and seed production in the field of aquaculture. Studying the spermatology of fishes is a comparatively new focus in aquaculture, which has emerged as an important area of fish research over the past two decades. In this regard, the cryopreservation of fish gametes is a crucial aspect. Moreover, energetics studies of gametes have become essential, considering the loss of vigour in the spermatozoa after cryopreservation. The latest development in this context is the cryopreservation of spermatogonial stem cell, which is also covered in the book, along with detailed information on embryo cryopreservation in fishes and crustaceans. The role of cryopreservation in conservation programmes is another important aspect, one that will especially interest biologists. This book addresses central issues in fish gamete cryopreservation and breeding, while also reviewing the history of cryopreservation. Its most unique feature is the breadth of its coverage, from basic information on reproduction in fishes, to such advanced topics as embryo cryopreservation. Chiefly intended as a handy troubleshooting guide, the book represents a valuable resource for research students in related fields.

Book Description
As the human population increases and nations become more industrialized, the habitat and water quality required for the survival of fish continues to decline. In addition to these environmental factors, fish populations are directly or potentially affected by harvesting, enhancement programs and introgression with hatchery-propagated or transgenic fish. To our knowledge no other scientific meeting has been assembled to consider the breadth of the problem, to review the technology that is presently available for the preservation of the germ plasm of salmonid stocks and to identify the scientific advances that are required to overcome the problems. Because many salmonids have spawning grounds within the confines of a specific region or county but will spend a large portion of their life cycle within the territorial waters of other countries or in the open ocean, the preservation of unique genes or gene pools in these animals requires international cooperation. This scientific meeting has provided a forum in which to discuss the problems, evaluate the present methods or technology for addressing the problems and suggest new directions or innovations that need to be implemented. During this meeting we limited our discussion to salmonid fishes. However, the general conclusions about the factors that affect the population dynamics of fish stocks and the technical aspects concerning the preservation of germ plasm will be applicable to other fish species.

Book Description
There is a growing awareness of a worldwide reduction in biodiversity and the urgent need to develop ways to redress the problem. This is the first major book devoted to the subject of genetic resource banking (GRB) and its role in preserving global animal biodiversity. In Cryobanking the Genetic Resource, expert contributors provide the non-specialist with an overview of the subject and the practical techniques associated with GRB. The book presents a basic introduction to the concepts, and then points the way to relevant literature for those who wish to develop practical applications. The first section deals with the potential contribution of GRB to biodiversity protection, while the second section offers an introduction to the basic cryobiology of gametes and embryos. In the first section, genetic considerations for planning interventions are discussed, together with disease control measures. This section explores related reproductive technologies necessary for the use of cryopreserved gametes and embryos, as well as a range of other issues such as ownership and security of stored material, and the size and location of cryopreserved material. The second section offers a thorough review of the literature on cryopreservation of spermatozoa, oocytes, and embryos. It gathers species into related groups for ease of reference, and does not assume extensive specialist knowledge so that newcomers to the field can make the best use of the available research. This book is an essential resource for zoologists and conservationists with an interest in genetic management and captive breeding, and also for students involved in biodiversity issues, conservation, and assisted reproduction.

Book Description
As salmonids have been reared for more than a century in many countries, one might expect that principles are well established and provide a solid foundation for salmonid aquaculture. Indeed, some of the methods used today in salmonid rearing are nearly identical to those employed one hundred years ago. Areas of salmonid research today include nutrition, smolt and stress physiology, genetics and biotechnology. The purpose of this book is to provide a useful synthesis of the biology and culture of salmonid fishes. The important practices in salmonid culture as well as the theory behind them is described. This volume will be of interest to students, researchers, fisheries biologists and managers as well as practising aquaculturists.
