Book Description
In 'Fast Facts: Early Hearing' Detection and Intervention an international team of contributors brings together the evidence that supports the effectiveness of universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) and early hearing detection and intervention services (EHDI). As well as considering elements essential to successful UNHS/EHDI programs, including screening technologies, resources, data management and family-centered early intervention services, the team discusses the resources needed to deliver such programs as well as the performance of screening programs globally. The aim is to provide a comprehensive compendium of information to make the case for greater recognition of the importance of UNHS/EHDI and so improve the life chances of children who are diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing. Table of Contents: • Newborn hearing screening and EHDI • Rationale for UNHS/EHDI programs • Prevalence of newborn hearing loss and performance of screening programs • Global status of newborn and infant hearing screening • Genetic and CMV testing • Medical evaluation and management of permanent childhood hearing loss • Middle ear effusion and other barriers to timely diagnosis • Data management systems for newborn hearing screening programs • Establishing UNHS/EHDI programs • Pediatric diagnostic audiology • Amplification device fitting • Family-centered early intervention • Unilateral hearing loss and auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder

Early Detection and Intervention in Audiology
Author: Katijah Khoza-Shangase
Publisher: Wits University Press
ISBN: 1776146565
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
A textbook of case studies for audiologists and speech pathologists that makes recommendations for early detection and intervention of hearing impairments in the South African context Early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) is the gold standard for any practicing audiologist, and for families of infants and children with hearing impairment. EHDI programs aim to identify, diagnose and provide intervention to children with hearing impairment from as early as six months old (as well as those at risk for hearing impairment) to ensure they develop and achieve to their potential. Yet EHDI remains a significant challenge for Africa, and various initiatives are in place to address this gap in transferring policy into practice within the southern African context. The diversity of factors in the southern African context presents unique challenges to teaching and research in this field, which has prompted this book project. The South African government’s heightened focus on increasing access to health care which includes ongoing Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs, make this an opportune time for establishing and documenting evidence-based research for current undergraduate and postgraduate students. Early Detection and Intervention in Audiology: An African Perspective aims to address this opportunity. Grounded in an African context with detailed case studies, this book provides rich content that pays careful attention to contextual relevance and contextual responsiveness to both identification and intervention in hearing impairment. With diverse contributions from experts in local and international contexts, but always with an African perspective, this is textbook will be an invaluable resource for students, researchers and practitioners.

Review of Educational Materials Developed for Medical Care Providers on Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Pages : 64
Book Description
Hearing loss is the most commonly occurring birth defect in the United States. This has led to extensive research in the area of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) ultimately leading to the conclusion that children with hearing loss benefit significantly from receiving intervention services within the first year of life. Medical Care Providers (MCP) are an essential team member in helping to promote the importance of EHDI because they are often the first point of contact for families of children with permanent childhood hearing loss (PCHL). The purpose of this study was to review the materials that national professional organizations and state EHDI systems have developed for MCPs regarding the care of children identified with PCHL. This review indicated that the information provided was not sufficient to educate MCPs as comprehensively as necessary and suggested the need for a standardized comprehensive physician's guide describing their role in EHDI programs.
