A round turbulent jet was impinged normally upon a circular cylinder and the resulting flow field was studied. The investigation was conducted using a jet which issued from a nozzle with an 11/16 inch diameter. The cylinder had a diameter of 6 5/8 inches. The jet impinged upon the cylinder at nozzle distances of 7, 15, and 30 nozzle diameters, and at velocities of 400 and 500 ft/s. The free jet was studied and found to be 'typical' by comparing it to earlier studies done with round turbulent jets. Surface flow visualization tests were performed to determine the direction of the flow. The wall jet about the cylinder, resulting from the impinging jet, was studied. Measurements of the velocity profiles and turbulence intensities were made. These results were compared to the same information obtained for flat plates and found to be similar for the nozzle distance of 7 diameters. At nozzle distances of 15 and 30 diameters the data was no longer similar. From velocity measurements, the spread rates and decay rates of the wall jet were determined. These results were compared to similar studies done for flat plates. Decay rates were found to be less than that of flat plates and spread rates were greater than that of flat plates, especially about the circumference of the cylinder.

An experimental study of the flow field associated with a two-dimensional, supersonic jet impinging normally on a flat plate is reported. Two wedge nozzles manufactured at the design Mach numbers of 1.75 and 2.75, respectively, were used to provide the jet. Extensive pitot surveys of the free jet were first conducted to determine the quality of the free jet. Results indicate that the simple wedge nozzles were adequate in providing the desired two-dimensional jet in the free expansion configuration. Results of surface pressure measurements and schlieren photographs of the impingement flow indicating the shock patterns are then presented and discussed. Although the results are principally reported for the case of the jet at isentropic exit conditions, some results of underexpanded and overexpanded jets are also included. Some discrepancies between the experiment and the simple theory based in the method of integral relations and the inviscid flow model are noted and discussed. An 'effective' jet Mach number is introduced which accounts largely for the discrepancy between experiments and theory, and its determination is based on the measured stagnation point pressure on the plate surface. An underexpanded, supersonic jet of cold nitrogen was exhausted into a constrictive, stepped launch tube. For one launch tube, the reduction in cross section was accomplished abruptly by a rectangular step. For the other launch tube, the reduction in cross section was accomplished gradually by a 15 degree-ramp. Thirty-seven static-pressure orifices were located along the walls of the two tubes. By varying the location of the nozzle exit-plane with respect to the step location, one could simulate (in a quasi-steady manner) the effect of movement of the rocket through the launch tube. Pitot probes located in the annular region between the simulated rocket-nozzle and the launch tube provided information about the reverse, or blow-by, flow created when the nozzle exhaust encountered the constriction. The vortex structures in an impinging round jet and the possibility of their control by imposing small jet pulsations are studied. The jet flow is investigated by measurements of the velocity field, of the temperature field, of the instantaneous wall pressure profiles and of the local values of heat transfer coefficient at the wall. The results show that the primary vortices, which roll-up in the jet shear layer, induce an unsteady flow separation at the wall, prohibiting the heat transfer between the wall and the fluid jet. It is found that the vortex roll-up can be controlled by adding small amplitude modulation of the nozzle exit velocity. A certain modulation frequency is able to decrease the vortex circulation and hence to prevent the unsteady separation of the flow. The local heat transfer coefficient can be thus influenced by application of these velocity modulations.
