The Development of the Lymphatic System in Man
Author: S.C.J. van der Putte
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642660908
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 60
Book Description
When Budge in the eighth decade of the nineteenth centlll'Y, started his investigations into the origin and development of the lymphatic system, he probably did not expect that these would be the starting-point for disputes that would continue well into our time. But rather than by his results were these disputes intensified by the controversial conclusions of some papers published by Gulland (1894), Ranvier (1897) and Sala (1900), and above all by some new investigations by Sabin (1902-1913) and Huntington (1908-1914) during the first decades of the twentieth century. The most important controversial point was the difference in opinion about the origin of the lymphatic system. An extensive review of the relevant literature is found in O. F. Kampmeier's book: "Evolution and Comparative Morphology of the Lymphatic System"; Thomas, Springfield, U.S.A. (1969). Whereas some investigators were of the opinion that the lymphatic system was formed from the venous system, there were many others, who believed that this system originates from confluent spaces in the mesenchyme and secondarily communicates with the veins. The most prominent advocate of the first mentioned opinion was Sabin (1902-1913). She believed that the lymphatics are formed by a process of sprouting from the large central veins in a limited number of definitely localized areas, but that these sprouts demonstrate almost immediately their own lymphatic character. From these sprouts separate primordia develop at first; these enlarge, confluence and form new sprouts which grow out into more peripheral parts of the embryo.

Comparative Anatomy And Development
Author: Geoffrey Bourne
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323140831
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 430
Book Description
Hearts and Heart-Like Organs, Volume 1: Comparative Anatomy and Development focuses on the complexities of the heart and heart-like organs in various species, from the invertebrates and the lower vertebrates to humans. More specifically, it investigates the hearts of worms and mollusks, urochordates and cephalochordates, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and humans. Organized into 11 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of myogenic hearts and their origin, the circulatory system of the annelids, and the nervous control and pharmacology of mollusk hearts. It then discusses the phyletic relationships and circulation systems of primitive chordates, cardiovascular function in the lower vertebrates, fine structure of the heart and heart-like organs in cyclostomes, and fine structure as well as impulse propagation and ultrastructure of lymph hearts in amphibians and reptiles. It also explains the neural control of the avian heart, functional and nonfunctional determinants of mammalian cardiac anatomy, postnatal development of the heart, and anatomy of the mammalian heart. The book concludes with a chapter on the anatomy of the human pericardium and heart. This book is a valuable resource for biological and biomedical researchers concerned with the anatomy and physiology of the heart.

Comparative Physiology
Author: K. Schmidt-Nielsen
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 0521216966
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 377
Book Description
This 1978 volume contains papers from contributors to the Third International Conference on Comparative physiology. The Conference selected particular areas for examination. In the first section of this volume the problems of how animals can take up water vapour from the atmosphere are considered as well as advances in studies of how water movements across epithelia are generated by solute movements. The second section deals with how a wide variety of animals, both invertebrate and vertebrate, living under stress in ionically unbalanced environments cope with the unusual difficulties of ionic regulation. In the final section biologists and physicists examine the role of fluid mechanics in biology. Both the theoretical basis of the hydrodynamics and aerodynamics and the biological investigations on the variety of fluid flows encountered inside and around organisms are presented.

Ichthyology Handbook
Author: B.G. Kapoor
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9783540428541
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1088
Book Description
In recent years, progress in fish biology has advanced at an unprecedented rate and has led to many breakthroughs in the field. This book provides a wealth of information on the strategies that fish adopt with respect to waters with markedly different physical and chemical characteristics. It shows how their physiology, behaviour and lifestyles are adapted to exploit particular niches and gives comprehensive insight into fish life under extreme conditions. The readers are introduced to the ways in which fish exemplify many phenomena of general biological interest - the existence of competitors, chaos, and predator-prey interaction. Fish pathology as well as the components of the immune system are addressed. In this book, original and at times controversial views are presented, areas which have so far received inadequate attention are highlighted and avenues for further research are suggested.
