Category : Business & Economics

The focus of the review has set out a number of recommendations for employment support and the author has focused on three areas to promote this objective. (1) To set out the types of support that today's young disabled people will want in a future economy; (2) Enshrining the right to work objectives as set out in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; (3) To make a case for cross-Government work to unlock the big enablers of employment, that is "Getting in, staying in and getting on" , which includes raising the aspirations of what disabled people can achieve. For "getting in" this should include more disabled people doing apprenticeships, work experience and work placements; for "staying in" there should be better promotion for Access to Work for retension and for "getting on" there should be greater encouragement of disabled people in setting up businesses and gaining skills for career development. Is Work Good for Your Health and Well-being?
Author: Gordon Waddell
Publisher: The Stationery Office
ISBN: 0117036943
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 260
Book Description
Increasing employment and supporting people into work are key elements of the Government's public health and welfare reform agendas. This independent review, commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions, examines scientific evidence on the health benefits of work, focusing on adults of working age and the common health problems that account for two-thirds of sickness absence and long-term incapacity. The study finds that there is a strong evidence base showing that work is generally good for physical and mental health and well-being, taking into account the nature and quality of work and its social context, and that worklessness is associated with poorer physical and mental health. Work can be therapeutic and can reverse the adverse health effects of unemployment, in relation to healthy people of working age, for many disabled people, for most people with common health problems and for social security beneficiaries.

ISBN: 9781983089978
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 154
Book Description
The Ability Hacks is the story of two Microsoft hackathon teams, one in the summer of 2014 and one the following summer of 2015. The first would pioneer new software to revolutionize the mobility of tens of thousands of people who live with severe paralysis caused by ALS, Parkinson's, cerebral palsy and traumatic neurological injuries. The second team would pioneer software to help kids with dyslexia read and love learning for the first time in their lives. This is the story of two small groups of driven, focused and passionate software engineers, program managers, marketers and advocates. It's the story of realizing the transformative power of technology for people with disabilities, not just for traditional consumer and industrial markets. It's the story of doing something truly great -- improving outcomes for everyone, discovering a design ethos and blazing a new trail for accessibility. Read more:More than one billion people around the world live with a disability of some kind, and it's estimated two-thirds of us know someone with a disability. Almost everyone will be temporarily or permanently impaired at some point in life, and those who survive to old age will experience increasing difficulties in functioning, according to the World Health Organization. This book explores an optimistic belief that computer software and hardware can empower people with disabilities in a multitude of scenarios. As one engineer interviewed for The Ability Hacks said, "It's not about the technology. It's about the people."

Services for people with rheumatoid arthritis
Author: Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts
Publisher: The Stationery Office
ISBN: 9780215544056
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 52
Book Description
Rheumatoid arthritis is a lifelong, progressive, musculoskeletal disease that causes severe pain, swelling and inflammation of the joints, and can lead to reduced joint function and disability. An estimated 580,000 people in England have the disease, with 26,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Annual healthcare costs to the NHS are £560 million, with costs to the economy of £1.8 billion in sick leave and work-related disability. Early diagnosis is crucial: starting treatment within three months can stop the disease getting worse and yet the time between experiencing symptoms and receiving treatment is typically nine months, unchanged since 2003. People's low awareness of the disease, causing them to delay seeking medical help, and GPs failing to spot the early symptoms and refer quickly enough for diagnosis by a specialist, cause the delay. Once diagnosed there may be a postcode lottery of care and wide variation in spending on rheumatoid arthritis across Primary Care Trusts. Access to the range of services needed to manage rheumatoid arthritis also varies. Three quarters of people with rheumatoid arthritis are diagnosed when of working age, and one third of people stop working within two years of being diagnosed. People with the disease often lack the right support mechanisms to help them maintain their independence and make an economic contribution to society. Dame Carol Black's review "Working for a healthier tomorrow" (2008, ISBN 9780117025134) recommended help for people with musculoskeletal conditions to remain in work, but this has yet to filter through to action on the ground.
