La competitividad de un país depende en gran medida de la capacidad de sus industrias para innovar y mejorar. El creciente aumento de la competencia en la industria de la construcción ha creado una creciente preocupación por la innovación, la que está siendo apreciada como una palanca relevante para obtener ventajas competitivas en el futuro. Pero, a pesar de ello, hay barreras que hacen que innovar en la construcción sea difícil y que el riesgo asociado sea casi inaceptable para la cultura del sector. Esto produce limitaciones en los esfuerzos de innovación que se realizan en el sector. Así, es necesario contar con mecanismos que permitan identificar estas limitaciones y proponer acciones para reducirlas y para potenciar la innovación y su gestión en empresas constructoras.
