European Theories in Former Yugoslavia shows that there is no such thing as a direct transfer or influence of theories from the centre to the margins, but only complex practices of borrowing, translating, and reinterpreting, conditioned by specific contexts; in this case those of former Yugoslavia and its contemporary cultural sphere. Here, reception is no longer simply about receiving fresh knowledge from the centre, but also about communicating feedback into broader contexts, shaped by multicultural and global connections and exchange. The book poses broader questions about contemporary theory today: what are theories today? How do specialised theories of culture, gender, media and art history relate to current philosophical turns in new materialism, neo-Marxism, and biopolitics? These questions, posed from the perspective of a European periphery, in this case former Yugoslavia, gesture toward the dialectically tense relationship between the centre and the margins, that is, between original theories and their transformed perspectives. The range of authors brought together here offers a cross-section of post-Yugoslav theory, comprising both young scholars in the early stages of their academic careers and more senior, established thinkers, educated both in the region and abroad, and coming from a variety of academic backgrounds, including art theory, gender theory, cultural studies and theory, sociology, anthropology, theatre studies, musicology, political theory, and literary theory, among others. The schools of thought they address, elaborate on, critique, and apply in their texts are similarly varied: from French post-structuralist theory and philosophy, via German critical and postmodern theory, to a number of other topics and authors in contemporary European theory and philosophy. This edited volume explores the cultural life of capitalism during socialist and post-socialist times within the geopolitical context of the former Yugoslavia. Through a variety of cutting edge essays at the intersections of critical cultural studies, material culture, visual culture, neo-Marxist theories and situated critiques of neoliberalism, the volume rethinks the relationship between capitalism and socialism. Rather than treating capitalism and socialism as mutually exclusive systems of political, social and economic order, the volume puts forth the idea that in the context of the former Yugoslavia, they are marked by a mutually intertwined existence not only on the economic level, but also on the level of cultural production and consumption. This collection of state-of-the-art essays explores conspiracy cultures in post-socialist Eastern Europe, ranging from the nineteenth century to contemporary manifestations. Conspiracy theories about Freemasons, Communists and Jews, about the Chernobyl disaster, and about George Soros and the globalist elite have been particularly influential in Eastern Europe, but they have also been among the most prominent worldwide. This volume explores such conspiracy theories in the context of local Eastern European histories and discourses. The chapters identify four major factors that have influenced cultures of conspiracy in Eastern Europe: nationalism (including ethnocentrism and antisemitism), the socialist past, the transition period, and globalization. In Researching Yugoslavia and its Aftermath, a common thread is the authors’ path through the time and space context in which fieldwork has taken place. This collection of essays locates, investigates and challenges the manner in which the Balkans and the West have constructed each other since 1945. Scholars from the two sections of the continent explore a wide range of fiction, film, journalism, travel writing and diplomatic records both to analyse Western European balkanism and to study Balkan representations of the West over the last fifty years. The first section looks back to the Cold War, examining the divergent, often favourable images of the Balkans that existed in Western culture, as well as the variety of responses that appeared in South-East European writings on the West. The second section analyses the transitions that took place in representation during the 1990s. Here, contributors explore both the harsh denigration of the Balkans which came to dominate western discourse after the initial euphoria of 1989, and the emerging tradition of contesting Western balkanism in South-East European cultural production. Through this dual emphasis, the volume exposes the representational practices that help to maintain a deeply divided Europe, and challenges the economic and political injustices that result. Despite the rise to prominence of postcolonial theory, with its awareness of global inequality, the current crises in many parts of South-East Europe have received scant attention in literary and cultural studies.
