L'objectif de déterminer l'effet de la densité de bulles sur la loi de traînée, une étude à la fois expérimentale et numérique a été menée. L'utilisation de la vélocimétrie laser Doppler et d'une double sonde optique dans une colonne à bulles a conduit à d'importants résultats sur la vitesse relative des bulles pour une dispersion eau pure/air. Il a notamment été mis en évidence une diminution de cette dernière avec le taux de vide local jusqu'à une valeur de 15 %, puis une augmentation au-delà. Ces évolutions sont le résultat d'une compétition entre différents phénomènes, tels que la gêne stérique, la turbulence et l'aspiration dans les sillages. Basée sur ces conclusions, une corrélation de traînée a été obtenue puis testée dans une approche de Mécanique des Fluides Numérique (MFN). L'intérêt de la corrélation a été démontrée, notamment pour la prédiction des régimes de fonctionnement de la colonne ainsi que pour une bonne description des profils de vitesse moyenne de liquide

Cette étude est consacrée à l'analyse expérimentale d'écoulements diphasiques gaz-liquide à bulles, en présence d'effets importants du taux de vide et de couplages forts entre la phase dispersée et la phase continue. L'importance de ces effets résulte soit de la présence d'un taux de vide relativement élevé (15%), soit de la présence d'un gradient de taux de vide. Le premier écoulement étudié est celui du mouvement induit par une injection homogène de bulles dans un écoulement uniforme. Dans cet écoulement gouverné par le mouvement relatif des bulles et par les interactions entre les bulles, nous avons pu mettre en évidence la dépendance vis à vis du taux de vide, des différentes échelles caractéristiques du mouvement. Le deuxième cas d'étude avait pour objectif initial l'analyse des interactions entre une couche de mélange, ses structures tourbillonnaires à grande échelle d'une part, et une injection homogène de bulles générant de l'agitation à petite échelle. Le couplage entre phases est tel que l'action de structures tourbillonnaires n'est pas perceptible (de nombreux indices semblent montrer que ces structures ne se forment pas). Le champ fluctuant est dominé par l'agitation induite par les bulles. Par ailleurs, les moindres défauts de l'injection de bulles sont capables de déstabiliser complètement le champ moyen de vitesse du liquide, et les écoulements sont très complexes. Enfin, le dernier cas d'étude concerne une couche de mélange soumise à des effets de flottabilité en situation confinée. Ces effets résultent de l'injection de bulles d'un seul côté de la couche de mélange. Ils induisent un écoulement moyen graduellement varié et un comportement instationnaire à grande échelle. La comparaison des résultats expérimentaux avec les prévisions d'une analyse de stabilité linéaire ne prenant en compte que les effets de masse volumique variable, montre que les grandes échelles du mouvement sont au premier ordre bien prédites par ces seuls effets.

The Violence of Modernity turns to Charles Baudelaire, one of the most canonical figures of literary modernism, in order to reclaim an aesthetic legacy for ethical inquiry and historical critique. Works of modern literature are commonly theorized as symptomatic responses to the trauma of history. In a climate that tends to privilege crisis over critique, Debarati Sanyal argues that it is urgent to rethink literary experience in terms that recall its contestatory potential. Examining Baudelaire's poems afresh, she shifts the focus of critical attention toward an account of modernism as an active engagement with violence, specifically the violence of history in nineteenth-century France. Sanyal analyzes a literary current that uses the traditional hallmarks of modernism—irony, intertextuality, self-reflexivity, and formalism—to challenge the historical violence of modernity. Baudelaire and the committed ironists writing in his wake teach us how to read and resist the violence of history, and thereby to challenge the melancholy tenor of our contemporary "wound culture." In a series of provocative readings, Sanyal presents Baudelaire's poetry as an aesthetic form that contests historical violence through rhetorical strategies of complicity, counterviolence, and critique. The book develops a new account of Baudelaire's significance as a modernist by dislodging him both from his traditional status as a practitioner of "art for art's sake" and from his more recent incarnation as the poet of trauma. Following her extended analysis of Baudelaire's poetry, Sanyal in later chapters considers a number of authors influenced by his strategies—including Rachilde, Virginie Despentes, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre—to examine the relevance of their interventions for our current climate of trauma and terror. The book summarises the outcom of a priority research programme: 'Analysis, Modelling and Computation of Multiphase Flows'. The results of 24 individual research projects are presented. The main objective of the research programme was to provide a better understanding of the physical basis for multiphase gas-liquid flows as they are found in numerous chemical and biochemical reactors. The research comprises steady and unsteady multiphase flows in three frequently found reactor configurations, namely bubble columns without interiors, airlift loop reactors, and aerated stirred vessels. For this purpose new and improved measurement techniques were developed. From the resulting knowledge and data, new and refined models for describing the underlying physical processes were developed, which were used for the establishment and improvement of analytic as well as numerical methods for predicting multiphase reactors. Thereby, the development, lay-out and scale-up of such processes should be possible on a more reliable basis.
