Ce travail fait partie d'un ensemble d'études sur l'observation dans le domaine solaire de la surface terrestre, caractérisée par sa réflectance et sur l'observation de l'atmosphère, caractérisée par son contenu en aérosols. Une première partie concerne l'amélioration de la méthode de Langley, permettant d'obtenir l'épaisseur optique des aérosols, grandeur caractéristique de leur contenu dans l'atmosphère. La méthode a été validée à partir des données sol de deux radiomètres multispectraux utilisés en Afrique de l'Ouest. Nous présentons ensuite une étude de faisabilité d'algorithme de corrections atmosphériques fondée sur les mesures sol précédentes et appliquée aux régions semi-arides du Sahel. Nous avons étudié plus particulièrement les effets directionnels induits à la fois par l'atmosphère et par la surface à partir de l'imagerie satellitaire NOAA/AVHRR. Une correction atmosphérique s'est révélée indispensable pour accéder au caractère directionnel de la cible et estimer l'indice de végétation généralement sous-estimé par les effets d'atmosphère. Une dernière partie consiste en une étude de faisabilité pour retrouver l'épaisseur optique des aérosols à partir de l'image satellite NOAA/AVHRR elle-même. La méthodologie est fondée sur la télédétection des surfaces sombres telles que la forêt dans le visible et les surfaces d'eau dans le proche infrarouge. L'étude montre que la végétation dense semble être une cible très prometteuse pour ce genre d'approche
