From an integrative perspective this study analyses the evolution of ethnolinguistic variability in Cameroon English (CamE) pronunciation along the educational echelon. Focus is on the phonetic/phonological variables of ethnolects distinctive from Received Pronunciation and CamE, and markers which prompt attitudinal reactions in speakers and listeners' perceptions. Interviews are conducted and a questionnaire designed to elicit pronunciation and attitudinal variability. Integrative methods are explored to analyse the data, and the «trace element hypothesis» postulated. As contribution to studies on the evolution in the New Englishes it proposes the lectal continuum and fossilised CamE features as yard sticks for mainstreaming CamE phonology and advocates sociophonetics in language teaching.

This book initiates the process of codification of a postcolonial variety of English, namely Cameroon English. It focuses on the present-day lexicon of this non-native variety of English. English has been in use in this territory for a long period of time and over the years, it has developed some characteristic lexical features which have not as yet been described fully. Previous researchers have been regarding linguistic innovations as cases of lexical errors or Cameroonisms; as a result, teachers and language purists have been discouraging their usage. Cameroon English (CamE) phonology has already developed into a quasi-autonomous system. Thousands of segmental and stress deviations from native English reach, or approximate to a frequency of 100%. Analysed from a generative perspective, the deviations are shown to derive from the fact that certain Received Pronunciation (RP) rules do not apply in CamE while others apply differently, partially or more generally, and still many others are typically Cameroonian. One of the major proposals of the book is the concept of Trilateral Process which consists of RP phonological processes symbolized by a side AA', the restructuring of the RP underlying representation (UR) into a CamE UR by AB and CamE phonological rules by BB'. The concept is applicable to other non-native Englishes.

The specific objectives are the following: To investigate how the education system in Cameroon promotes/ support national identity and nation building, to examine how language can support nation building in Cameroon, to investigate the challenges of nation building in Cameroon. Since November 2016, Cameroon has witnessed violent conflicts due mainly to its colonially brewed linguistic cum cultural divide. What is now referred to as the ‘Anglophone Crises’ has manifested seriously in the struggle by the English-speaking minority to preserve its language, education and judiciary systems, against perceived threats of assimilation by the majority French-speaking population who tend to dominate the central government, given that they are in majority. Therefore, this work set out to show that the absence of national identities, especially in the languages and education systems adopted by Cameroonians, poses serious challenges to achieving durable peace and sustainable nation-building. A qualitative content analysis was used for the study. Content in the social studies where materials read and collected from both primary and secondary sources to determine patterns and generate themes. The study was analyzed descriptively and presented in graphs, tables, and charts, while critically the study found that although common understanding is growing across the English-speaking and French-speaking Cameroonian population, the State has done far too little to create, popularize, and mainstream concrete tokens of national identity, such that over time the evolved ‘Cameroonian’ identity progressively displaces the alien and divisive “Francophone and Anglophone” identities. Accordingly, a multi-stakeholder, all-inclusive and continuing national dialogue process should be institutionalized to construct national identities to serve pivots upon which national policies on communication, education, and adjudication are anchored. Achieving the above outcomes, however, calls for political will, sincerity of purpose, and sound diversity management and peacebuilding policy implementation capacities.

The bicultural polity of Cameroon has become problematic over the years. In addition to the increasing marginalization experienced by its English speaking component in many domains (politics, administration, economy, culture), it is facing mounting inequality and disarray despite the nation-building aspirations at reunification in 1961. This book examines the very basis of the union crisis by tracing the causes to the asymmetrical nature of negotiations between the contracting partners the founding fathers of the union and the politics of guile and force that has characterized the regimes in Yaound. From a federal model that takes the equality of the contracting parties as a given, the polity has developed into an ethno-regional patchwork designed by its architects to be essentially unequal in nature. Consequently, the segmented Anglophone community can exist only in contradiction within itself. They have been worked into the regimes statecraft of consciously maintaining or re-activating ethnic boundaries inherited from colonialism. An analysis of the cultural and linguistic dimension of the union shows contrasting drives between the assimilation/attempts to dominate by the French-speaking component and resistance by Anglophones. The analyses further show the projected harmonization and rollback by the State, the creative blends and the crystallization around continuing or reproduced colonial experiences, a fierce competition between elites with a drive to impose the culture of the demographically dominant and a refusal to accept the idea of a linguistic minority. The contentious experience, Yenshu Vubo argues, can still be remedied by reforms in a politics of possibilities.These reforms must be ready to re-examine the constitutional basis of the union by revisiting the often dismissed question of the form of the state defined as one and indivisible (a new federal architecture as requested by several political voices). Institutions should be restructured to attend to diversity issues and essential linguistic differences while consolidating any strategic gains of the union such as the creative blends and the acceptance of specifi cities of each community, statutory equality of citizenship and the essential clauses of the fi rst federation.
