Book Description
Excerpt from Essays in Christian Thinking Now whatever we may think of God', we do not think of Him as one of a species but as a Being essentially unique, and we may therefore conclude that unless there is possible for us in life an experience of Him apart from all naming and recognition of Him, then we can never give His name any meaning at all, and' no'knowled'ge or experience of Him will be possible to us. His name will be to us as the names of colours or notes to those who have never seen or heard. The first task of the religious thinker is, there fore, to see whether there are any such ex periences in life, and, if so, what they, are and what they mean. And we may assume that if anywhere in life we have experience of God and are at all capable of recognizing His presence, the experiences in which we do so will be our highest, so that our search sends us to examine the creation and enjoyment of the beautiful, loyalty to truth and right, love and service. Book Description
Excerpt from The Keeper of the Keys: Being Essays on Christian Thought in the Twentieth "God forbid that I should glory, save in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world." - Gal. vi. 14. Howe'er I live, Thou judgest me, Dear Saviour, with Thy blessed Rood, Whereto I turn when most I flee; Though, at my wildest wayward mood, I cannot hide except in Thee. The lightest word, the lowliest thought I feel is carried to that Bar, Before which we are hourly brought And standeth the remotest star. Thereat is, with each hidden care, The heart of everything laid bare. Man as he is and Nature's core Are thus unriddled, and the Truth Outshines of all the bane we bore; Redeemed earth repairs its youth, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays on Faith This volume is intended as a continuation, and in a certain sense as a completion, of two others which have preceded it. In one, Christianity was considered as a Gos pel; in another, as an Ideal; and in the present set of Essays it is considered as Thought. It is not, of course, suggested that these are either valid or absolute distinctions; but they form convenient and suitable points of View from which to regard the Christian Religion as it is related to Reason. Book Description
Excerpt from Christian Rationalism, Essays on Matters in Debate Between Faith and Unbelief IT might prove instructive, if one cared to go into the question, to ascertain how free thought ever came to be identified with infidel thought, or a freethinker with a disbeliever in the doctrines of Christianity. So it is, how ever, as we all well know, to the very serious prejudice of Christ's religion; the appropria tion of the title of Freethinkers by the men who deny the Gospel of Jesus seeming to imply, that those who accept it do so on terms which will not bear the application Of free thought; or, if Christian believers may be credited with thinking at all, then are they to be counted slavish thinkers; or held to be un der bonds to some authority which discounte nances thinking. Book Description
Excerpt from Happiness and Goodwill and Other Essays, on Christian Living If there were but one disciple of Jesus on earth there could be no kingdom. As soon, however, as there were two disciples the kingdom had appeared. The comradeship between them would immediately initiate a new kind of force, operating powerfully to determine what manner of persons they should become. Their class-consciousness, as it were, would be born and set itself in conflict with the world. These two would begin to grow like unto each other, their private peculiarities being pared down or lopped ofi by the social forces now set going. The advantages of mutual counsel, encour agement, caution, warning, and a division of labor would begin to appear. Agreement in belief would make the beginnings of a creed. Mutual arrangement of tasks would initiate the organization of a church. Mem ory of previous successes or failures would begin the formation of a tradition. In this simple Christian friendship, had it existed in such an elementary form, we should find the embryonic kingdom, which in time should rule the earth. J ob Scott died in 1793, and would therefore belong to the Mediaeval ages of Quakerism, neither Ancient nor Modern. His simple and forcible language - familiar and unaffected style - render his exposition of the deepest spiritual truths and mysteries, both agreeable and easy of understanding. The variety of Doctrinal Subjects embraced in the Selected Extracts, makes this little book like a Compendium of all essential Quaker views and truths. In presenting a Copy to a few Special friends, not of the Society of Friends, who are thought to have a hungering after righteousness and spiritual Truths, it is with a fervent desire that some of these precious Divine Teachings and Mysteries may be opened to their understand ings, so as to produce conviction and benefit.
