Book Description
Excerpt from A Concise History of England and English People A history of England, given in a few hundred pages, must necessarily be a sketch. In the present volume the main purpose has been to make as prominent as possible the personal career of the chief actors in the several parts of the great drama. The work is in tended strictly as an introduction to a more continuous study of the subject 5 and the matter, it is hoped, has been so put as to awaken and call into action the reader's powers of thought and judgment. Unless these are exercised throughout, the task of reading history is of not the smallest use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from England and the English From an American Point of View What will you have for breakfast, if, alas, you will have any breakfast the first morning out? Something very light perhaps. These islanders, you soon find, have little regard for lightness. A light dish of eggs in some form, a light roll, fresh butter, coffee and hot milk? Yes, of a sort, but none of them light. You soon forswear coffee for tea, and ere long the passive bulwark of resistance wearies you into eggs and bacon, and cold meat, and jams, for your first meal of the day. Little things are typical. What you want is not refused you, but what they have and like is gradually forced upon you. Thus they govern their colonies. No raising of voices, no useless and prolonged discussion, no heat gen crated, no ridicule of your habits, or eulogy of their own, none of these, but just slow-moving, unchanging, confident bulk! Book Description
Excerpt from History of England and the British Empire From the deposition of Richard the Second to the virtual abdication of James the Second, every act of national resistance was accomplished by the union of classes, and was founded upon some principle of legal right for which there was legal precedent. Out of the traditional and almost instinctive assertion of the popular privileges have come new developments of particular reforms, each adapted to its own age, but all springing out of that historical experience which we recognise as Constitutional. In the words of Macaulay, we are, in the history of England, to contemplate the steps by which the England of Domes (lay Book, the England of the Curfew and the Forest Laws, the England of crusaders, monks, schoolmen, astrologers, serfs, and outlaws, became the England which we know and love, the classic ground of liberty and philosophy, the school of all knowledge, the mart of all trade. The charter of Henry Beauclerc, the Great Charter, the first assembling of the House of Commons, the extinction of personal slavery, the separa tion from the See of Rome, the Petition of Right, the Habeas Corpus Act, the Revolution Of 1688, the establishment of the liberty of un licensed printing, the abolition of religious disabilities, the reform Of the representative system, - all these seem to be the successive stages of one great revolution; nor can we fully comprehend any one of these memorable events unless we look at it in connection with those which preceded, and with those which followed it. Each of those great and ever-memorable struggles, Saxon against Norman, Villein against lord, Roundhead against Cavalier, Dissenter against Churchman, Manchester against Old Sarum, was, in its own order and season, a struggle, on the result of which were staked the dearest interests of the human race. Book Description
Excerpt from England and the English, Vol. 1 of 2 IT is only to express my thanks to certain kind correspondents for the assistance they have afforded me, that I shall delay the Reader from the work now before him. To one gentleman ofthe highest scientific attainments and reputation I am indebted for many suggestions, of which I have availed myself in my brief view of the State of Science - to another gentleman, qualified, perhaps before all men living, to judge profoundly of the philosophy of Bentham, I am also indebted for considerable aid in the sketch of that remarkable writer's moral and legislative codes which will be found in the Appendix to the second volume; and to the taste and critical know ledge of a third gentleman I owe many obligations in the chapter devoted to the survey of the State of the Arts amongst us at this time. To the last gentleman my acknowledgments are perhaps the greater, because he has suffered me, in his general approbation of my theories, to apply a part of his. Book Description
Excerpt from The Making of the English Nation There are so many School Histories of England already in existence, that it may perhaps seem presumptuous on the part of the authors of this series to add six volumes more to the number. But they have their defence: the Oxford Manuals of English History are intended to serve a particular purpose. There are several good general histories already in use, and there are a considerable number of scattered 'epochs' or 'periods'. But there seems still to be room for a set of books which shall combine the virtues of both these classes. Schools often wish to take up only a certain portion of the history of England, and find one of the large general histories too bulky for their use. On the other hand, if they employ one of the isolated 'epochs' to which allusion has been made, they find in most cases that there is no succeeding work on the same scale and lines from which the scholar can continue his study and pass on to the next period, without a break in the continuity of his knowledge. Book Description
Excerpt from Mighty England: The Story of the English People To write this book for young Americans, I travelled eight times in England and also visited often Ger many, the Netherlands, and France - countries from which the ancestors of the English people, for the most part, came. It was like tracing a river to its source to go back from the island to the High Dutch Of the German mountains, and like drifting down the flood to stay among the Low Dutch in Holland and Belgium. In France it was more like sailing on the lake, and in Italy, like rowing on a pond. Out Of these countries streams of men and influence have flowed into Great Britain. Yet it was from the Germanic and Norse lands that the great body of ideas and customs of the many tribes that made the English nation came. I have gone into caves and crypts, seen barrows and mounds excavated, and visited the old moot places of the Salic Franks, as well as museums and archives, and have seen corona tions, parades, and pageants. I have studied what my friend, the late Edward A. Freeman, called Eng lish People in its Three Homes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
