The text on Fractures has been greatly increased, consonant with the new interest to the profession generally which this subject has acquired in recent years. The chapter on Military Surgery has been entirely rewritten in conformity with the surgical experiences of this latest and greatest war. A number of illustrations borrowed from the British Journal of Surgery and other sources are included. The Technique of the emergency interventions will be found to coincide with the best practice of the present time. Book Description
Core Topics in General & Emergency Surgery meets the needs of surgeons in higher training and practising consultants for a contemporary and evidence-based account of this sub-specialty that is relevant to their general surgical practice. It is a practical reference source incorporating the most current information on recent developments, management issues and operative procedures. The text is thoroughly referenced and supported by evidence-based recommendations wherever possible, distinguishing between strong evidence to support a conclusion, and evidence suggesting that a recommendation can be reached on the balance of probabilities. This is a title in the Companion to Specialist Surgical Practice series whose eight volumes are an established and highly regarded source of information for the specialist general surgeon. The Companion to Specialist Surgical Practice series provides a current and concise summary of the key topics within each major surgical sub-specialty. Each volume highlights evidence-based practice both in the text and within the extensive list of references at the end of every chapter. An expanded authorship team across the series includes additional European and World experts with an increased emphasis on global practice. The contents of the series have been extensively revised in line with recently published evidence. The volume contains a new chapter on the complications of bariatric surgery. This updated text will appeal to all General Surgeons who wish to keep up to date in both elective and emergency conditions, while providing the relevant information for the Specialist Surgeon who is still required to look after undifferentiated emergencies and carry out routine elective general surgical procedures.

Book Description
Excerpt from Emergencies of a General Practice The scope of this book is expressed in the title. The author has attempted to record some of the observations and practical experi ences Of a somewhat active service of forty years in emergency practice, the class of work where the attending physician is called on to think quickly and to act with rapidity and good judgment. Reference is also made to certain pathologie conditions, appendicitis, tubal rupture, acute pancreatitis, etc., emergency cases though dis tinctly surgical. The general practitioner should be familiar with the clinical symptoms of these conditions, the prompt recognition of which will not only tend to relieve him of personal responsibility, but will enable him to insist upon surgical assistance at a time most opportune to his patient. Amputations, fractures, and dislocations are considered strictly from an emergency standpoint, or physician's first aid. Special forms of amputation and the more modern classical bone surgery are not alluded to, due to the many excellent textbooks on these sub jects. The object of the author is to consider the common, un heralded, everyday accidents or emergencies that may and do arise to confront the general practitioner at a time when least expected. Definite information along this particular line is limited, not oh tainable from textbooks, and certainly not available in time of great need; therefore the author feels that a work of this character de voted exclusively to this subject will prove of practical value and material assistance to many practitioners.
