Book Description
Excerpt from Elisha the Man of God IN No character of the Bible, perhaps, is the life of Jesus, the son of God, so perfectly mirrored as in Elisha, the man of God. His gentleness Of spirit and holiness of life; the patience and faithfulness which must have char acterized his teaching; and, above all, the marvelous and beneficent character of his miraculous deeds; were a prophecy in actual life of him who spake as never man spake, who went about doing good; and whose miracles proclaimed him to be the Son Of God with power. The desire to direct the attention of students of the word of God with deeper interest to the beautiful and Christ-like character of the son of Shaphat, and thus incite to greater holiness Of life, a more perfect consecration to the service of God, has led to the preparation of these chapters. The aim has been to make due acknowledgment, in the proper place, of authors and works quoted from. It seems proper however, that special mention should be made Of the His tory of Elisha, by Dr. Krummacher; Lectures on History of Elisha, by Rev. Henry Blunt; The Prophet Elisha, by John M. Lowrie, D. D Elisha the Prophet, by Alfred Edersheim, D. D.; the Pulpit Commentary; and Lange's Commentary. R. C. D. Lansing, Mich January I, 1904. Book Description
Excerpt from Elijah the Prophet Now, these two deities, Baal, the male, and Ashtaroth, the female, represented the fertilizing and productive principle in nature, and their worship was that of power. To the more cultivated and refined, it was simply a species of Pan theism; to the multitude, it was what one has called the worship of deified abundance, under a splendid and sensu ous ceremonial or, as Maurice has put it, The worship of Baal was the worship of power as distinguished from right eousness.t Hence, the apostasy of Ahab in giving up the personal Jehovah, the covenant God of Israel, and the cre ator and preserver of all things, and preferring Baal, was analogous to, if not, indeed, precisely identical with, the mod ern heresy of those who discard a personal God, and refuse to believe in him who is a loving father, while they deify nat ure under the name of law. Thus this old history has a special appropriateness to the present time, and we may prof itably ponder for a little the record of the manner in which the efforts of Ahab were counteracted and neutralized. The introduction of Baal-worship into Israel was part of a deliberate plan on the part of Ahab. He wished to strength en himself to the fullest extent against his Syrian enemies, while, at the same time, he developed the material resources of his country by an alliance with the Zidonians, who held the sea-board. If he could only succeed in welding Israel and Zidon together, he felt that he could defy the dynasty of Damascus, and look forward to a time of great prosperity from a participation in the unrivaled commerce of the Phoe nicians. But there is no unifying in uence so strong as that of religion. Hence he determined to carry the nation over bodily into the Zidonian worship; and, as the first step in that direction, he allied himself to the royal house of Zidon. Book Description
Excerpt from Prophet Elisha Mr. Lowrie's early education, though confined to those branches Of learning designed to fit him for secular employ ments, was careful and thorough. His purpose was to de vote himself to mercantile plirsuits, and at an early age he entered the service of a brother-in-law, then at the head of a large and flourishing establishment. He had unusual Qualifications for this walk Of life, and, had be devoted him self to it, would doubtless have' attained both eminence and fortune. But he sacrificed his pleasant position and flatter ing prospects to a conviction that he was called to a nobler, but by no means so lucrative, a sphere Of action. Book Description
Excerpt from The Second Book of Kings: From Chap; VIII., And the Books of Chronicles, Ezra, and Nehemiah He hoped, no doubt, that Ben-hadad was mortally Sick, and it must have been a cruel, crushing disappoint ment when he heard that there was nothing deadly in the illness. Another hope was gone from him. The throne seemed further oif than ever. I suppose that, at that instant, there sprang in his heart the resolve that he would kill Ben-hadad. The recoil of disappoint ment Spurred Hazael to the resolution which he then and there took. It had been gathering form, no doubt, through some years, but now it became definite and settled. While his face glowed with the new deter mination, and his lips clenched themselves in the firm ness of his purpose, the even voice of the prophet went on, howbeit he shall certainly die, ' and the eye of the man of God searched him till he turned away ashamed because aware that his inmost heart was read. Then there followed the prophet's weeping, and the solemn announcement of what Hazael would do when he had climbed to the throne. He shrank in real horror from the thought of such enormity of Sin. Is thy servant a dog that he should do such a thing?' Elisha sternly answers: The Lord hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria.' The certainty is that in his character occasion will develop evil. The cer tainty is that a course begun by such crime will be of a piece, and consistent with itself.
