Book Description
Excerpt from The Elements of Plane Geometry A solid has three dimensions - length, breadth, and thick ness. The boundaries of a solid are surfaces. A surface has two dimensions -length and breadth. The boundaries of a surface are lines. A line has one dimension length. The extremities of a line are points. A point has posi tion, but no magnitude. When a point moves continuously, it traces a line. Like wise, a surface may be generated by a moving line, and a solid by a moving surface. Hence we may conceive of a surface as existing in space without reference to its being a boundary of a solid. In like, manner we may conceive of lines and points as existing independently in space. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Plane and Solid Geometry Most persons do not possess, and do not easily acquire, the power of abstraction requisite for apprehending the Geometri cal conceptions, and for keeping in mind the successive steps of a continuous argument. Hence, with a very large proportion of beginners in Geometry, it depends mainly upon the form in which the subject is presented whether they pursue the study with indifference, not to say aversion, or with increasing interest and pleasure. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Plane Geometry, Vol. 1 In, teaching Geometry, it appeared, at first, singular that students could master, the difficulties of Arithmetic and Algebra, and yet fail to comprehendthe relations Of, magnitudes which appealed to the sense of sight. A little closer Observation, however, revealed the fact that many. Students accomplished little more than the committing to memory variations of A, B, C, and Of correct geometrical reasoning they had hardly a conception. Even the intelligent pupils were found unable to apply the principles to new matter; and the solution of, problems not in the book was almosten impossibility. Geometry, if prop erly taught and' thoroughly understood, is just as flex; ible as Arithmetic or Algebra. Excerpt from The Elements of Plane and Solid Geometry: With Numerous Exercises Aline has no breadth, for if it had any, however small, it would form part of the surface, and would be space of two dimensions; and if in addition it had any thickness, it would be space of three dimensions; hence a line has neither breadth nor thickness. Book Description
Excerpt from Plane Geometry Although the study of geometry is important from an informational point of view, it is generally recognized that a genuine mastery of the subject means real achievement in the solution of original exercises. The chief aim of the authors in preparing this text has been to give such assistance to students as will stimulate insight and develop power to solve exercises of gradually increasing difficulty. The content and organization of the first book of geometry are determining factors in the student's progress in the sub ject. The first ten or twenty theorems determine whether a student will grasp quickly the general trend of the subject or remain bewildered for an indefinite period. The simplicity and directness of the early theorems and the order in which they are presented are elements of the highest importance in an effective introduction. These elements were given the most careful consideration in the preparation of this text. If the first theorem is used in proving the second and the sec ond in proving the third, and so on, the student will soon see a reason for mastering the content of each theorem. But if the initial theorem is used for the first time in the fifteenth theorem, and the second is used next in the eighth, the first month's work will give the impression: that geometry deals with unrelated facts which lead nowhere. Such an arrange ment of the theorems of geometry will hamper even the strongest students, and will make progress almost impossible for the less capable. Book Description
Excerpt from The Elements of Geometry IN the Essentials of Geometry, the author has endeavored to prepare a work suited to the needs of high schools and academies. It will also be found to answer as well the requirements of colleges and scientific schools. In some of its features, the work is similar to the author's Revised Plane and Solid Geometry; but important improve ments have been introduced, which are in line with the present requirements of many progressive teachers. In a number of propositions, the figure is given, and a statement of what is to be proved; the details of the proof being left to the pupil, usually with a hint as to the method of demonstration to be employed.
