The purpose of this study was the measurement of electron impact ionization cross sections of metastable-molecules of N2. Cumulative cross sections calculated by classical techniques are more than an order of magnitude smaller than those determined from the electron impact measurements. Delayed emissions from the First and Second Positive Systems of N2 were measured. Experimental design and apparatus are described. Emissions are assigned and discussed.

The vibrational excitation of nitrogen molecules by electron impact was studied by analyzing electrons at an angle of 72 degrees. The vibra tional excitation in N2 is interpreted as a process involving a compound state of the nitrogen molecule. The lifetime of the compound state is comparable to the vibration time, i.e., of the order of 10 to the -14th power sec. (Author).
