Book Description
Excerpt from Electric Traction: A Treatise on the Application of Electric Power to Tramways and Railways The considerations involved in the application of electric power to the working of tramways and railways may be divided into two classes (1) technical, (2) financial. In the present volume we shall confine our attention to the former. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Electrical Industry: Lighting, Traction, and Power On the other hand, the industry has made tremendous progress in the twenty Odd years since it was born - progress much more rapid than that made, say, by the steam-engine a century ago. There are reasons for the rapidity of the advance, and a glance at the history of the science will Show how it was that electricity suddenly appeared in the commercial world after having passed centuries in the grub-stage in the labora tories of philosophers. Book Description
Excerpt from Electric Traction One special feature the author hopes may be regarded as a merit namely this, that it deals not only with dynamic and constructional principles and details, but also with commercial results and economic conditions. The author holds strongly that technical students should direct their attention much more to this side of technics than is now usual. The physical side is only one half of engineering science; and no technical science will ever be rationally complete, nor will it ever win the full confidence and respect of the practical world, until it rests equally upon the two true bases of physical and economic law which together govern all industry. Since this book deals with European work alone, it is necessary to say that the author has always been among those who have insisted upon the great debt that Europe owes to America in regard to Electric Traction. Although Europe, and not America, is the native home of nearly all original ideas in this department of engineering, still it was in America that the world learnt all its important early practical lessons and gained the great bulk of its first practical experience. The reasons for confining the book to European practice have been twofold. The author labours under a constitutional inability to write about things he has not seen with his own eyes and examined for himself, while he has had very limited opportunity for more than cursory observation of trans-atlantic work. Then, again, the most recent and progressive developments of traction design are to be seen here, and not there. American electric-traction engineering has already become standardized and conservative: its European pupil is still eagerly striving after new and higher things. Book Description
Excerpt from Electric Traction: A Practical Handbook on the Application of Electricity as a Locomotive Power IN this book the Author has endeavoured to deal with the subject of Electric Traction from a practical standpoint, and mathematics have only been introduced where neces sary, and then only in a very simple form. Detailed descriptions of various traction undertakings have not been given, as what is good practice in one case is not necessarily so in another. Book Description
Excerpt from Electric Power and Traction In common with practically every industry Electrical Engineering has become the centre of a wide and increasing circle of allied trades, of which probably the majority are connected in some way or another with its Power and Traction branches. To the members of such trades and callings, to whom some knowledge of applied Electrical Engineering is desirable if not strictly essential, this book is particularly intended to appeal. It may also be useful to the student as it covers with but small exception purely practical ground, and enters to some extent into those commercial considerations which in the long run must overrule all others. For obvious reasons it is impossible to incorporate in one volume the whole theory and practice of a subject so far reaching as Electric Power and Traction; it therefore becomes necessary at the outset to credit the reader with a certain amount of scientific and technical knowledge: to fix the standard, let us say, such as should naturally have been acquired by observation in the practice of an allied trade and by general reading in an age that is essentially electric. Book Description
Excerpt from Electrical Traction IN the following pages I have endeavoured to deal with the principles relating to Electrical Traction, and I have, I hope, incorporated sufficient descriptive matter for the purpose of illustrating the subjects treated of. Much of the information with regard to the Leeds Tramways which will be found in the text is given for the first time. I have also included descriptions of certain experiments which I have made for the purpose of this work. Descrip tive matter and illustrations have been obtained from several sources, especially from the Journals of the Institu tions of Civil and Electrical Engineers, and the Northern Society of Electrical Engineers, Engineering, the Railway World, and a Report of the Corporation of Sheffield on Tramway Traction.
