Excerpt from The Electric Light: Its History, Production, and Applications While not pretending to be an exhaustive presentation of the subject, the exposition will be found to be sufficiently full to enable the reader to understand the essential features of present electric-lighting apparatus, and to appreciate the character of the problems which had to be solved before this method of illumination could enter upon an industrial career. Book Description
Excerpt from The Present Condition of Electric Lighting Hamburg has, at present, only 25 plants in operation, with about 80 arc lights and incandescent ones. Of these, four establishments, with 25 arc lights and 200 incandescent lights, belong to the Hamburg government and are worked by gas-motors, while the larger private works use steam-engines for power. Book Description
Excerpt from Electric Lighting for the Inexperienced The result of leaving these little details to the man is familiar enough. For one well lighted' house one finds a dozen in which the wiring is badly planned, the switches thought lessly arranged, the fittings wrongly placed, the lamps unsuitable, the shades ugly. There is no excuse nowadays for this state of things. Electric light in the house is no longer a new-fangled and inscrutable toy. Yet the householder, as a rule, still lacks that little knowledge of the things to look out for which would enable him to interpret a specification, avoid the more obvious of the common mistakes, and get for his money the most advantageous return. The aim of this book is to help him. Even the reader who is already a consumer will, it is believed, find a good deal in these pages that he did not know before. He may agreeably employ his leisure in discovering what parts, if any, of his own installation are beyond the reach of criticism. Book Description
Excerpt from Incandescent Electric Lamps and Their Application Since the advent of the carbon filament incandescent lamp so many wonderful discoveries have been made that the adoption of the electric glow lamp as an illuminant is now almost universal. A little thought will establish the fact, however, that the improvements made have been chiefly in the lamp itself, the introduction of the metal filament being responsible for the increased efficiency that has placed electric lighting practically within reach of all. In comparison with the advances made in filament construction those made in the direction of scientific artificial lighting have been small. The formation of the Illuminating Engineering Society has done much to create an interest in this important subject, while further, the work of Government Commissions and the publication of their reports on school, factory and library lighting has served still more to impress people with the importance of adequate illumination. If good lighting is important in public institutions it is equally if not more important in the home, and the approved methods of disposing of the light units so as to avoid unnecessary glare and produce an adequate illumination, as well as the judicious selection of wall and ceiling coverings, should be fully understood by all users and installers of electric light. The existing literature on the subject is of too scientific and technical a character for other than scientists, and in presenting this treatise the author hopes that the obvious gap may be filled and that the general reader may be assisted in deciding upon the most suitable candle-power and distribution in his own particular case. The author has to thank Messrs. Siemens Bros, for information concerning tantalum and permission to reproduce one of their diagrams; Messrs. The General Electric Co. for information concerning the drawing down of tungsten filaments; Messrs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
