El libro de Los Siete Pecados Capitales corresponde a un ciclo de varios autores que escriben sobre cada pecado capital desde la perspectiva psicoanalítica, es una visión teórico-clínica y una descripción del significado de las características de cada concepto. La idea de pecado está asociada al exceso y a la trasgresión y puede representar a la parte oscura e irracional que refleja el dominio de las pasiones, de los deseos y de los instintos del ser humano. No obstante, los poetas han cantado alabanzas a algunos pecados, concebidos por ellos como un baluarte que nos protege de una hegemonía de la racionalidad y de los predicadores de ideales ascéticos, que pueden hacernos perder el gusto por la vida. La valoración de los pecados cambia con los tiempos y es así como algunos de ellos pueden aparecer unidos a ciertas virtudes. La pereza, por ejemplo, ha sido reivindicada al concebirla como el arte de no hacer nada; ese tiempo de detención saludable nos libera de la ideología del trabajo, que concibe a una humanidad laboriosa y entregada al progreso material y técnico, que produce lo inhumano... La envidia, que fue considerada el peor de los pecados, sabemos sin embargo que está llena de admiración. La soberbia, más ambiciosa aún, sueña con la posible confluencia del mundo humano y el divino, mientras que la cólera nos lleva a pensar en Jesús expulsando a los fariseos del templo. Otros pecados han sido vinculados a las artes, de manera que la avaricia, con su deseo de economía, ha inspirado al arte abstracto y al minimalismo. La gula ha mejorado su estatus social merced a la fusión entre la estética y la gastronomía. La lujuria, a su vez, goza del privilegio de ser identificada con las potencias transgresoras y las libertades, por lo que está omnipresente en el arte de nuestro tiempo. El psicoanálisis no ignora que un ser humano dominado por sus pulsiones pierde su libertad y el sentido de su responsabilidad, pero también sabe que la fuerza de la vida es una transformación constante de los excedentes pulsionales, que son la base del movimiento creador y de los grandiosos logros culturales.
