Book Description
The study of Latin American and Caribbean international relations has a long evolution both within the development of international relations as a general academic undertaking and in terms of the particular characteristics that distinguish the approaches taken by scholars in the field. This handbook provides a thorough multidisciplinary reference guide to the literature on the various elements of the international relations of Latin America and the Caribbean. Citing over 1600 sources that date from the nineteenth century to the present, with emphasis on recent decades, the volume's analytic essays trace the evolution of research in terms of concepts, issues, and themes. The Handbook is a companion volume to Atkins' Latin America and the Caribbean in the International System, Fourth Edition, but also serves as an invaluable stand-alone reference volume for students, scholars, researchers, journalists, and practitioners, both official and private.

Book Description
A sequel to Latin American Foreign Policies: Global and Regional Dimensions (Westview, 1981), this collection of original essays presents a comprehensive view of the principal foreign policy issues of the nations of Latin America and lays the foundation for understanding the challenges facing those nations in the 1980s. The book begins with an introduction to the major themes of conflict and cooperation in Latin American foreign policies, an overview of U.S.-Latin American relations, and an assessment of contemporary research in the field. The authors then analyze the economic challenges, regional conflicts, and security concerns of the nations of South and Central America, with case studies of the foreign policies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Cuba. A concluding section suggests future directions for research on Latin American foreign policies in the 1980s and offers a theoretical framework for the analysis of foreign policy behavior in the region.

Book Description
The Beagle conflict was a territorial dispute between Argentina and Chile over the determination of the layout of the eastern mouth of the Beagle Channel, which affected the sovereignty of the islands located south of the channel, and east of Cape Horn and its adjacent maritime spaces. The first antecedents of the conflict date back to 1888, seven years after the signing of the Treaty of Limits. In 1901, the first Argentine map appeared in which some of the islands in question were drawn as within Argentina’s control. Despite the small size of the islands, their strategic value between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans caused a long conflict between the two South American states that went on for much of the 20th century, causing a number of ‘minor’ incidents, and almost culminating in a major war. The conflict focused on the dispute over the sovereignty of the islands and the oceanic rights generated by them to Chile, but it was not limited exclusively to these islands. Volume 1 of The Beagle Conflict mini-series covers the origins of the dispute and border clashes between the two countries from the time of the independence of Chile and Argentina from the Spanish Crown, until early 1978, and is illustrated with original photographs, custom-drawn artworks and maps.
