Abstract: Habitat is now the basis of most impact assessments and resource inventories, and it is the basis of many species management plans, mitigation planning, and environmental regulation. Habitats are relatively stable through time, easily defined in intuitive physical terms, and provide a tangible resource for negotiations and decision making. Numerous and varied methods of analyzing and reporting habitat conditions have been developed by federal, state, provincial, and private agencies. Habitat assessment approaches vary greatly among regions of the continent. The great variability in methods and an unusually wide range of practices have impeded the ability of agencies to share and synthesize information. A diversity of methods is desirable in the initial stages of a rapidly developing field, but enough time has passed to assess the state-of-knowledge and identify the best of the currently used methods and techniques. This manual is intended to provide fisheries biologists with a limited set of techniques for obtaining aquatic habitat data. The manual also describes the range of information collected and used in agency habitat analyses. Agencies planning habitat programs should review the synthesis of established and documented methods being used in North America (Appendix 1) and the planning recommendations in Chapter 2. Then, the remaining chapters should be reviewed to determine what types of habitat data should be included in the agency's program.

Most aquatic ecosystems have variable water levels. These water-level fluctuations (WLF) have multiple effects on the organisms above and below the waterline. Natural WLF patterns in lakes guarantee both productivity and biodiversity, while untimely floods and droughts may have negative effects. Human impacts on WLF have led to a stabilization of the water levels of many lakes by hydraulic regulation, untimely drawdown due to water use, or floods due to water release from hydropower plants in the catchments. This book provides a first review in this field. It presents selected papers on the ecological effects of WLF in lakes, resulting from a workshop at the University of Konstanz in winter 2005. Issues addressed here include the extent of WLF, and analyses of their effects on different groups of biota from microorganisms to vertebrates. Understanding how biological diversity affects ecosystem functioning is a key question in modern ecology. This is of particular importance in the general context of recent global changes caused by human activities, such as water abstraction, flow regulation, shifts in agricultural practices, contamination, climate changes, and biological invasions. These changes are affecting biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and their complex interactions simultaneously. However, our ability to understand how genes, individuals, populations, communities, and ecosystems may respond to such changes is limited, despite ecologists frequently being requested to provide policymakers and managers with predictions. Indeed, the species that composed biodiversity can establish complex trophic links between them in the ecosystems. This structure of food webs is under the permanent constraint of community dynamics, which connects species, populations, communities, and ecosystems. Therefore, the response of food webs to perturbations can help ecologists to better understand the relationship between biological diversity and ecosystem functioning.
