Radiotherapy of Intraocular and Orbital Tumors presents a new approach to the role of radiation therapy in the management of ophthalmic cancer. The indications for ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging studies are analyzed, and treatment techniques, together with their results, are described for each tumor. The effect of massive doses of x-radiation upon the eye was studied in experiments on 9 albinotic and 6 pigmented guinea pigs, 60 New Zealand and 60 chinchilla grey rabbits, 2 rhesus monkeys, and 2 dogs. The clinical and histological changes in the retina were observed. The most significant post-radiation effect was the immediate and irreversible impairment of the rod cells manifested by typical changes in the ERG, night blindness, constriction of the visual field, and pyknosis of the rod nuclei followed by degeneration of the outer retinal layers.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has sponsored research supporting development of personnel safety standards for exposure to Radio Frequency Radiation (RFR) for over a quarter century. NATO previously recognized that one of the most important tools used in the RFR effects research laboratory is accurate dosimetry when it supported a NATO Advanced Studies Institute (ASI) on Advances in Biological Effects and Dosimetry of Low Energy Electromagnetic Fields held in 1981, in Erice, Sicily. That meeting resulted in a NATO ASI publication; Biological Effects and Dosimetry of l Non-ionizing Radiation: Radiofrequency and Microwave Energies . The most recent NATO sponsored program on RFR was an Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on "Developing a New Standardization Agreement (STANAG) for Radio frequency Radiation" held May 1993, at the Pratica di Mare Italian Air Force Base, Pomezia (Rome) Italy. That ARW produced an ASI proceedings, published in 1995: Radio frequency Radiation Standards, Biological Effects, Dosimetry, Epidemiology, and Public Health Policy2. The Rome ARW and the Proceedings served as a springboard to the much needed revision of the NATO Standardization Agreement (STANAG) 2345 MED "Evaluation and Control of Personnel Exposure to Radio Frequency Fields - 3 kHz to 300 GHz,,3, which was subsequently promulgated in October 1998. One of the published recommendations developed by the Rome ARW was to hold this second ARW focusing on dosimetry and measurements.

The spectral transmittance of ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared light through the ocular media of humans has been measured. Using freshly enucleated eyes, the transmittances of each component part (cornea, aqueous humor, lens, vitreous humor) were determined for the wavelength range from 0.22 to 2.8 microns. To date 9 eyes have been measured, ranging in age from 4 weeks to 75 years. Two types of measurements were made: the first to measure the total light transmitted (direct and scattered) at each wavelength and the second to measure the percent transmittance of that light passing directly through the various media without absorption or scattering. The results show that: (a) the transmission of ultraviolet radiation decreases with the age of the eye; (b) the transmission of infrared radiation appears to be independent of the age; and (c) the maximum total transmittance of the whole eye, about 81 percent, is obtained in the region from 600 to 850 millimicrons.
