This quasi-experimental study investigated the impact of looping the school counselor with a group of students from middle school to high school on the academic failure rate, attendance, discipline referral rate, and student assistance program (SAP) referral rate of students. Two groups of students in a small suburban school district near a metropolitan area, one who looped with the school counselor from middle school to high school and one changed school counselors in high school, were chosen for the study. The study compared archival data of both groups of students from the first semester of 9th grade. In addition, questionnaire data were gathered from students and their parents in each of the two groups in the study to determine their perceptions of the transition from middle school to high school. Finally, teachers who had taught both groups of students were surveyed to determine their perceptions of the attainment of academic competencies related to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Standards for School Counseling Programs of the group of students who looped with their school counselor from middle school to high school as compared with a group of students who changed school counselors in high school.

School counselors have an important role in promoting student academic success. Empirical studies show that when school counselors are involved in academic interventions then student academic performance improves. This study explores middle school counselors' use of academic interventions to enhance student academic performance. Specifically, this study examines middle school counselors' experiences (use, extent of use, frequency of use) with academic interventions and how particular school counselor (years of experience, caseload) and school variables (size, type, setting, number of students receiving free/reduced lunch) are related to the use of academic interventions. This study examined three critical questions and tested six hypotheses using a quantitative research design. A series of descriptive statistics and one way ANOVAs were used to answer the study's three research questions. Two hundred fifty-nine middle school counselors from around the United States participated in the School Counselor Use of Academic Intervention Survey. This online survey consisted of counseling and school demographic information, intervention use, extent and frequency of intervention use and what time of day interventions took place. The study found that middle school counselors reported actively using evidence-based academic interventions to enhance student success. As the school counselor's caseload increases, the use of academic interventions decreases. Similarly, as the student population increases, the school counselor's use of academic interventions decreases. The impact of years of experience was inconsistent, with increased and decreased use of academic interventions in a non-linear pattern. The school counselor's role in improving student academic success is a focus in current school counseling literature; but little research has examined the use of interventions, especially at the middle school level. The findings from this study demonstrate the important role middle school counselors have in using academic interventions. Limitations, implications, and suggestions for further research are provided.
