Book Description
Fashion design has the capacity to expand and enhance our lived experience for prospering societies. Existing pedagogical models in fashion design education tend to overlook perspectives of caring practices, which means perspectives of inclusiveness regarding human health and the complex relationship fashion has with larger systems; ecology, economics and society. Therefore, contributions to new kinds of platforms in the fashion sector are often inhibited while possibilities in design practices that engage and care for life are postponed. Yet, emerging practices and curricular models in several fields of design are tapping into these contemporary issues through conscious design thinking; that is, by cultivating a broad "systems approach" to a problem-opportunity, values focus and collective dialogue. My thesis explored these approaches as a way to envision responsive possibilities in fashion design education that engage with caring practices. My research sought to address the following questions: How can the methods and perspectives of conscious design thinking be brought more into fashion design education? In what ways can fashion design educators stimulate different levels of awareness among their students on contemporary issues in fashion design? What would incite fashion learners to consider caring practices in their learning experiences? Drawing on my participation as an apprentice teacher in a fashion studio class, interviews with fashion design students, photo documentations of student projects, and class observations conducted for three months through fieldwork research at my former school in fashion design Colegiatura Colombiana in Medellin, Colombia, my data identified the factors that contributed to the conclusions of this study. In addition, related literature and personal experiences as a fashion designer helped to determine the project's relevance. The findings suggested that the methodologies fostered in fashion design education are highly critical in influencing the intentions of student projects. For this, I propose an alternative course of study in fashion design for teaching new methodologies that can provide opportunities to address perspectives usually overlooked in this practice. Fashion design education is evolving to better respond to the complexity of our times. In engaging with broader issues in contemporary design, caring practices allow the expansion of the role of fashion design education to create conscious design thinkers in society. Further reflections on this research resulted in visualizing the potential of the proposed educational model to transform patterns of thought that can assist students in identifying their aptitudes and position themselves more effectively within the many venues in the fashion sector.

Book Description
The theme of this book is Knowledge and Media in Learning Systems, and papers that explore the emerging roles of intelligent multimedia and distributed technologies as well as computer supported collaboration within that theme are included. The spread of topics is very wide encompassing both well- established areas such as student modelling as well as more novel topics such as distributed intelligent tutoring on the World Wide Web. Far from undermining the need to understand how learning and teaching interact, the newer media continue to emphasise the interdependence of these two processes. Collaboration and tools for collaboration are the major topics of interest. Understanding how human learners collaborate, how peer tutoring works and how the computer can play a useful role as either a more able of even a less able learning partner are all explored here.
