Book Description
Written by an international panel of specialists on Thailand who share a common concern for the environment, this volume examines the causes and consequences of environment change both in the countryside and the urban areas of the Kingdom. The papers, however, in no sense reflect a common view; the authors embrace contrasting environmental ideologies in discussing a wide range of concerns. These include the role of Buddhism and tourism in promoting sustainable development, environmental systems of thought and action, the practicalities of water pollution control in Bangkok and the Gulf of Thailand, and the changing bases of life and livelihood among the hill peoples of the North. The environment as an issue of concern is now important phase of assimilation, interpretation, prescription and action. The papers in this volume reflect this change.

Book Description
Thailand has been recognized as having rich natural resources, the natural capital to support the countrys economic development and the livelihood of Thai people. Tapping on its vast fertile area, the country has been one of the players in global food production for last four decades. However, these achievements have also had negative consequences on biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and human health both in rural and urban areas. Thailand: Environmental Resources and Related Policies and Social Issues reviews the pressures, impacts and status of selected natural resources and environmental concerns, e.g., forest resources, coastal and marine resources, protected areas and biodiversity, soil and land resources, water resources, energy and climate change, and economic instruments and modeling tools for enhancing management planning through various contributed chapters that are organised into five sections: Section One: Setting the Scene; Section Two: Physical Environment and Natural Resources; Section Three: Governance and Management; Section Four: Global Initiatives and Economic Tools; and Section Five: Conclusions and Recommendations. In addition, the concepts and lessons learned from case studies presented in this book do not only provide the analytical review status, but also identify key issues and management options for achieving the designated national goals and international commitments on biodiversity conservation and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. It is hoped that this book will be of value in terms of the necessary inputs to effectively support the implementation of the Thai governments initiatives on moving the country towards Thailand 4.0 or a value-based economy, as well as the recent 20-year National Strategic Plan (2017-2036). The contents and materials will also be of interest to individual scientists, stakeholders, practitioners and policy-makers working for the cause of natural resources and environmental, management and sustainable development in Thailand and beyond.

Book Description
The last twenty years have witnessed an important movement in the aspirations of public policy beyond meeting merely material goals towards a range of outcomes captured through the use of the term 'wellbeing'. Nonetheless, the concept of wellbeing is itself ill-defined, a term used in multiple different contexts with different meanings and policy implications. Bringing together a range of perspectives, this volume examines the intersections of wellbeing and place, including immediate applied policy concerns as well as more critical academic engagements. . Conceptualisations of place, context and settings have come under critical examination, and more nuanced and varied understandings are drawn out from both academic and policy-related research. Whilst quantitative and some policy approaches treat place as a static backdrop or context, others explore the interrelationships of emotional, social, cultural and experiential meanings that are both shape place and are shaped in place. Similarly, wellbeing may be understood as a relatively stable and measurable entity or as a more situation-dependent and relational effect. The book is structured into two sections: essays that explore the dynamics that determine wellbeing in relation to place and essays that explore contested understandings of wellbeing both empirically and theoretically.

Book Description
Thailand has experienced extraordinary demographic change and record-breaking economic growth during the last few decades. This study uses a recently developed projection model - HOMES, Household Model for Economic and Social Studies - to examine the changes and their continuing implications for six demographically sensitive sectors of the economy: education, health, housing, consumer expenditure, household saving, as well as labor force, employment, and wages. The relationship between demographic change and each of these economic sectors is assessed through extensive analysis of census and survey data collected during the 1980s. The study is a joint effort of the East-West Center's Program on Population, the National Economic and Social Development Board of Thailand, and the Asian Development Bank.
