Fortune and Misfortune in the Ancient Near East
Author: Olga Drewnowska
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 1575064669
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 449
Book Description
In the week between July 21 and 25, 2014, the University of Warsaw hosted more than three hundred Assyriologists from all over the world. In the course of five days, nearly 150 papers were read in three (and sometimes four) parallel sessions. Many of them were delivered within the framework of nine thematic workshops. The publication of most of these panels is underway, in separate volumes. As is usually the case, the academic sessions were accompanied by many opportunities for social interaction among the participants, and there was time to enjoy the historical and cultural benefits of Warsaw. Special honor was accorded to two American Assyriologists whose origins can be traced to Warsaw, Piotr Michalowski and Piotr Steinkeller, and a special session to recognize their contributions to the study of ancient Mesopotamia was organized. In this book are presented papers on the main theme of the meeting, “Fortune and Misfortune in the Ancient Near East.” The 31 essays are organized into 5 sections: (1) plenary presenations on “What Is Fortune? What Is Misfortune?” ; (2) humanity and fortune/misfortune and luck, with discussion of specific examples; (3) additional papers on definitions of fortune and misfortune; (4) the effects on city and state; and (5) God and temple.

British Airship Bases of the Twentieth Century
Author: Malcolm Fife
Publisher: Fonthill Media
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 382
Book Description
Numerous books have been written on airships, but few concentrate on their bases and infrastructure to support their operations. British Airship Bases of the Twentieth Century starts with documenting the primitive facilities from which the early machines flew in the years prior to the First World War. The outbreak of the First World War resulted in airships being adopted for military purposes and bases were established across Britain. Most of these were operated by the Royal Naval Air Service for the protection of shipping against U-boats. In the 1920s, an attempt was made by the British Government to build airships for commercial transport. The locations where these giants of the sky were constructed are described as well as the proposed overseas passenger terminals. The latter part of this enthralling and detailed book chronicles the attempt to establish the airship as a means of transport to link together the far flung lands of the British Empire. Reference is also made at attempts to revive the airship in the closing decade of the 20th century and the locations associated with them. Illustrations: 170 black and white photographs

Auspicious Good Fortune
Author: Sumangal Morhall
Publisher: John Hunt Publishing
ISBN: 1780990367
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 246
Book Description
Has your life ever flashed before you? Sumangali Morhall chased everything Western society taught her to pursue: material wealth, academic success, and even the perfect relationship, only to discover something deeply significant was still missing. A sudden near-death experience opened her eyes, and her life began anew. Left with nothing and nobody to rely on, her inner strength blossomed and her spiritual search began in earnest. Her journey led her to study meditation with Indian spiritual Master, Sri Chinmoy: a direction she could never have imagined. Sumangali reveals the arcane practice of learning from a contemporary Guru in lively detail, shedding light on misconceptions while remaining candid about her own initial doubts. Heartwarming, courageous, and beautifully crafted, this spiritual memoir follows a Western woman learning the ways of the East, and putting them into practice in her modern world: an ordinary person leading an extraordinary life.

Opportunity Dubai
Author: Peter Cooper
Publisher: Harriman House Limited
ISBN: 1905641974
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 192
Book Description
Opportunity Dubai is the autobiographical account of a real-life business adventure in the modern city of Dubai. The author was a financial journalist in the city before deciding to join the internet revolution in 2000 by establishing the financial information website AME Info (www.ameinfo.com).However, this book is far more than the story of a relatively small business and its success (albeit a business that became a resource now used by millions of readers and sold for a multi-million dollar fortune in 2006). It is also an inside track on what is happening in modern Dubai, the focal point of hundreds of billions of dollars of investment, and a city whose GDP has quadrupled in a decade, outperforming any other in the world, including China. The author charts the progress of Dubai in the 2000s and setbacks such as the Second Gulf War and 9/11, which actually proved the source of a remarkable injection of repatriated capital into the increasingly ambitious projects of the Maktoum family under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.Perhaps, as the trading hub of the Middle East, it should be no surprise that Dubai has been able to capitalise greatly on the Third Oil Boom. But Sheikh Mohammed's restless business vision never stands still. He created the Dubai Internet City in late 1999, just in time in fact to give the author of this book a dedicated free zone with 100 per cent ownership for his small business. And other developments such as the Burj Dubai and The World Islands proceed at an amazing pace.Opportunity Dubai asks where this is all leading to and whether it can be sustained. However, the author's own experience of prospering from the opportunities presented by this incredible city point in a positive direction; and many of his insights will benefit anybody thinking of joining this adventure, whether doing business in Dubai, buying a home there, or just taking up a job as an expatriate.
