Book Description
Excerpt from The Mechanics of Machinery I should like to add that although, partly through pressure of work and partly through ill-health, this book appears only now, yet a great part of it has been in type, and a still greater part written and given in lectures, for a number of years. This has rendered it almost impossible for me to make any use of the excellent work of Prof. Cotterill, or of the recently published graphic methods of Prof. R. H. Smith, or the still more recently published (in any complete form) kinematic work of Professor Burmester, as I should otherwise have liked to do. Book Description
Excerpt from Dynamics, Construction of Machinery, Equilibrium of Structures, and the Strength of Materials With the last treatise, on the strength of materials, some trouble has been taken to collect and condense the great amount of scattered information supplied by numerous experimenters. Our knowledge of this subject has greatly increased within the last fifteen years, and deserves a collection and careful collation: this is wanting; but it is hoped that the reader who desires not to be ignorant of the principal things known, and the principles deduced from modern experiments, will find a practical statement of them in the present treatise. Book Description
Excerpt from Machine Design, Vol. 1: Kinematics of Machinery IN these notes an attempt is made, first, to give, as clearly and concisely as possible, the principles of mechanical motion in such a manner that their application can readily be made to any mechanism for determining the motion of any of its parts; then to show the methods of dealing with such problems as the designer meets daily. Long and tedious discussions have been avoided as far as possible, it is hoped, fully. Subjects such as toothed gearing and couplings are taken up only to the extent of the forms that are in the most common use. But with these subjects, as well as all others, references to what are believed to be the best works in their lines are given frequently. All available works on the subject have been freely consulted, but in no case has any matter which has not become common property by its frequent publication been used without the consent of its author. The exceedingly clear and concise work of Prof. Albert W. Smith, of Stanford University, entitled Machine Design, has been of most valuable assistance throughout. This work includes both kinematics and mechanics. To Prof. Smith, especially, the writer would acknowledge his obligations and express his thanks. Book Description
Excerpt from Principles of the Mechanics of Machinery and Engineering, Vol. 2 of 2: Applied Mechanics IN writing this, the second volume, I have adhered as closely as possible to my views of what the work should be, as explained in the preface to the first volume. I am aware that these views are not adopted by all who are capable of judging in the matter, and that a more general and mathematical treatment of the subject would have been preferred by many. But I have now long experience in teaching to fall back upon, and am thereby convinced, that the comparatively elementary style adopted as it can be followed by those who have not made extensive mathematical acquirements, will more surely lead to the introduction of applications of Mechanical Science in the routine practice of engineers, than the more general methods of treating these subjects have done. Book Description
Excerpt from The Theory of Machines: The Principles of Mechanism; Elementary Mechanics of Machines The present treatise dealing with the Principles of Mechanism and Mechanics of Machinery is the result of a number of years' experience in teaching the subjects and in practising engineering, and endeavors to deal with problems of fairly common occur rence. It is intended to cover the needs of the beginner in the study of the science of machinery, and also to take up a number of the advanced problems in mechanics. As the engineer uses the drafting board very freely in the solution of his problems, the author has devised graphical solu tions throughout, and only in a very few instances has he used formulae involving anything more than elementary trigonometry and algebra. The two or three cases involving the calculus may be omitted without detracting much from the usefulness of the book. The reader must remember that the book does not deal with machine design, and as the drawings have been made for the special purpose of illustrating the principles under discussion, the mechanical details have frequently been omitted, and in cer tain cases the proportions somewhat modified so as to make the constructions employed clearer.
