Book Description
A field-tested guide to surviving a nuclear attack, written by a revered civil defense expert. This edition of Cresson H. Kearny's iconic Nuclear War Survival Skills (originally published in 1979), updated by Kearny himself in 1987 and again in 2001, offers expert advice for ensuring your family's safety should the worst come to pass. Chock-full of practical instructions and preventative measures, Nuclear War Survival Skills is based on years of meticulous scientific research conducted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Featuring a new introduction by ex-Navy SEAL Don Mann, this book also includes: instructions for six different fallout shelters, myths and facts about the dangers of nuclear weapons, tips for maintaining an adequate food and water supply, a foreword by "the father of the hydrogen bomb," physicist Dr. Edward Teller, and an "About the Author" note by Eugene P. Wigner, physicist and Nobel Laureate. Written at a time when global tensions were at their peak, Nuclear War Survival Skills remains relevant in the dangerous age in which we now live. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Cresson H. Kearny was a graduate of the Texas Military Institute and of Princeton University. He worked for Standard Oil in Venezuela and served in the US Army as a captain in the Panama Mobile Force. Many of his jungle-tested inventions were used by US infantrymen in WWII. In 1964, Kearny joined the Oak Ridge National Laboratory civil defense project, which is where the research supporting his book Nuclear War Survival Skills was conducted. He died in 2003.

Book Description
I was an N.C.O. instructor with the Royal Observer Corps for 12 years specialising in the Effects of Nuclear Weapons. I was given exemption from the entry exam due to my level of experience and became a member of the Institute of Civil defence giving me the appellation M.I.C.D. I remained a member between 1987 and 1992. I was for 4 years a North Yorkshire County Council Community Defence Adviser and helped to provide the countries first ever emergency survey of a town to provide an action plan for that community, that town was Harrogate. I also ran my own survival school in North Yorkshire in the 80's as well as a survival club for local kids. I suspect that there are many of you who would wish to be able to protect their families should our enemies decide to explode a 'dirty bomb' on British soil for example. We would I believe be extremely foolish to discount the potential for another Chernobyl or a Fuchishima type incident to occur affecting us here in the UK, Or to suffer our very own British nuclear accident as our nuclear plants grow ever older. This is not forgetting the dangers posed by the now developed long range nuclear weapons held by Iran and Syria, both of which I consider to be rogue states. And not forgetting North Korea and it's threat to launch nuclear missiles. Experiencing a nuclear event is almost impossible for us to contemplate for obvious reasons, as it would be the end of the world. But would it? We as a world have had around 2,000 nuclear test explosions and we are still here, the world has not ended, life goes on, does it not? The question is if you survived the initial effects of a nuclear explosion would you have the knowledge and the skills to survive the residual effects? That is where my Complete Nuclear Survival Guide comes in, as by keeping it with you in your bug-out-bag, you will not only know where to find it but if you bug-out, so along goes this valuable survival information although as you will read later. I actually recommend bugging-in. The Complete Nuclear Survival Guide will give you the facts and figures to SURVIVE!!! Tom W. Linden

Book Description
For today’s shell-shocked individual investors, financial expert Charles B. Carlson offers hands-on advice on how to survive — and thrive — in a wildly fluctuating market. The economic recession of the past year, followed by the tragedy of September 11, sent a ripple of panic through investors in 2001. The market shed trillions of dollars in wealth, and hundreds of thousands of individual investors suffered substantial financial losses. The volatility we experienced last year was more than a fluke, argues investment expert Charles B. Carlson. With the ongoing changes in the economy, including changes in corporate reporting laws, instant availability of financial information, and the ability to buy and sell stocks with the touch of a keystroke, volatility is here to stay. But volatility isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, Carlson argues, if you know how to weather today stormy markets, investing in them can be very profitable. In The Smart Investor’s Survival Guide, Carlson shows investors how to make volatility work to their advantage. First, he argues, it is critical that investors match their investment style — growth, value, buy and hold — to the kinds of stocks they pick. For long-term investors, Carlson recommends that a portion of their portfolio be invested in what he calls the calm eye of the storm, “easy hold” stocks that have consistent, steady growth, and very low volatility. Even in the terrible market downturn of 2000, when the Nasdaq lost 39 percent of its value and stocks like Lucent and Cisco saw their share price drop by 80 percent or more, a number of investment sectors actually gained in value. The Dow Jones index, minus its technology stocks, broke even. In other words, even in the worst markets, not every stock or sector goes down. Through what he calls the nine essential laws of successful investing in a volatile market, Carlson reveals: • How to diversify the portfolios across stock sectors and investment vehicles • The critical importance of matching one’s investment style — value, growth, buy and hold — to the kinds of stocks one invests in • The importance of “easy hold” — no-brainer stocks — in a portfolio, stocks that will grow 10 to12 percent a year with minimal volatility. Written by one of the most trusted names in the financial community, The Smart Investor’s Survival Guide shows investors how to master today’s turbulent markets, and profit from them.

Book Description
Dot-Winners vs. Dot-Loserswhat works, what doesn't, and why With more dot-coms going bust every day, new-economy entrepreneurs and managers are scrambling for detailed information on what went wrong with the losers and how they can emulate the winners. DotBomb gives them the answers with a close look at a number of notable dot-com failures, comparing their experiences with those of several prominent dot-com successes. With the help of candid commentaries by staff members, venture capitalists, industry analysts, and market research, Sean Carton performs postmortems on Priceline, Living.com, PlanetRX, ValueAmerica, and other recent dot-com debacles and identifies the dot-pathologies that led to their demise. He also provides contrasting examples of successful companies that excel in that area, and he extracts powerful lessons on what managers can do to follow their examples.
