Reclaiming al-Andalus focuses on the construction of the scholarly discipline of Orientalist studies in Spain. Special attention is paid to the impact that the elaboration of a series of historical interpretations of the legacy left by Muslim and Jewish culture in Spain had over the writing of national history in the period of the Bourbon Restoration. A historiographical account of Spains Orientalism tackles the problematized issues that both Arabist and Hebraist scholars sought to address. Orientalist scholarship thereby became inextricably linked to different interpretations of the historical shaping of Spanish national identity. Political circumstances of the day impacted on the approach these scholars took as they engaged with the Iberian Semitic past. And this at a critical moment in the crystallization of modern Spanish nationalism. A common thread running through the work of these Orientalist scholars was the tendency to nationalize or Hispanicize cultural activity of the Semitic populations that lived on the Iberian Peninsula in medieval times. This Hispanizication was instrumentalized in diverse ways in order to serve nation-building efforts. Hence Orientalist scholarship became integrated into the national debates that were shaping Spanish cultural and political life at the turn of the century. Reclaiming al-Andalus explains how regenerationist projects taking form after the national crisis of 1898, and different polemical discussions around religion-state affairs, deeply influenced the writings of academic Orientalism. The intertwined connection between Orientalist scholarship and nationalist debates in Spain has hitherto been understudied. This book not only contributes to the general debate on modern Orientalism, but most importantly presents a profound new viewpoint to the ongoing debate on the conflictive history of Spanish nationalism.

Keith Whinnom, Professor of Spanish and Deputy Vice-Chancellor in the University of Exeter, died on March 6, 1986. He was one of the leading hispanists of his generation, and a world authority on the literature of the reign of the Catholic Monarchs (and, in a quite different area, on pidgin and creole languages). The contributors to this memorial volume are all specialists in the literature of Keith Whinnom’s chosen period, and all had close links with him, through personal friendship, research collaboration, and correspondence. One night in December 1800, in the distant mission outpost of San Antonio in northern Mexico, Eulalia Californio and her lover Primo plotted the murder of her abusive husband. While the victim was sleeping, Prio and his brother tied a rope around Juan Californio's neck. One of them sat on his body while the other pulled on the rope and the woman, grabbing her husband by the legs, pulled in the opposite direction. After Juan Californio suffocated, Eulalia ran to the mission and reported that her husband had choked while chewing tobacco. Suspicious, the mission priests reported the crime to the authorities in charge of the nearest presidio. For historians, spousal murders are significant for what they reveal about social and family history, in particular the hidden history of day-to-day gender relations, conflicts, crimes, and punishments. Fatal Love examines this phenomenon in the late colonial Spanish Atlantic, focusing on incidents occurring in New Spain (colonial Mexico), New Granada (colonial Colombia), and Spain from the 1740s to the 1820s. In the more than 200 cases consulted, it considers not only the social features of the murders, but also the legal discourses and judicial practices guiding the historical treatment of spousal murders, helping us understand the historical intersection of domestic violence, private and state/church patriarchy, and the law.

Lumbre de fe is the most extensive and articulate text of polemic against Islam written during the 16th century in Spanish in the Iberian Peninsula. The work is the result of the preaching task carried out by Joan Martí de Figuerola for the conversion of the Mudejars of Zaragoza between 1517 and 1518, a task that brought Figuerola into numerous confrontations with both ecclesiastical and secular authorities in Aragon for disturbing the coexistence between the two confessions. Lumbre de fe also stands out for its use of qur’ānic texts in Arabic to attack Islam. These texts, also transliterated in Latin characters and translated into Spanish, are commented and discussed by Figuerola, making use of his vast theological erudition and his experience as a preacher in the crown of Aragon. The manuscript in which the work is preserved also contains numerous images representing Islamic beliefs and rites, which further reinforces the enormous originality and strength of the work.
