Book Description
Excerpt from Discourses on the Apostolical Succession Things which are very absurd in themselves, are sometimes forced by circumstances into positions Of great importance. This we believe to be true Of the modern doctrine of Apostolical Succession. N othing could save it from utter contempt, but the extent and respectability of the denomination ofchristians With which it stands associated. Enor mous as its pretensions are, it gains currency from the stations and influence of those who appear on its side; and it Will not die of itself. Like other errors, it must be brought to the tests Of reason and scrip ture; and to subject it to the operation of these tests, is the appropri ate work of the pastors of the churches, who, in their respective places, are set for the defence of the Gospel. Book Description
Excerpt from The Unity of the Church; The Ministry; The Apostolical Succession: Three Discourses But one of the chief and among the most excellent purposes which the creed answers, especially by its introduction into the worship of the congregation is the preservation of unity, among the members of the body. It is thus that we are all enabled to speak the same thing, and be perfectly joined together, as the apostle enjoins, in the same mind and the same judgment. It is thus we confess Christ before men, profess the faith once delivered to the saints, and preclude all just occasion for divisions. Book Description
Excerpt from The Messages of the Apostles: The Apostolic Discourses in the Book of Acts and the General and Pastoral Epistles of the New Testament Arranged in Chronological Order, Analyzed, and Freely Rendered in Paraphrase The present volume includes the apostolic discourses contained in the earlier chapters of Acts and the Epistles of James, First Peter, Jude, Second Peter, First Timothy, Titus, Second Timothy, Hebrews, First, Second, and Third John, in the order named. The dates of many of these books are uncertain, and no order can claim to be more than approximately chronological. In general, how ever, the sermons from Acts, the Epistle of James, and the First Epistle of Peter may be said to represent the earlier forms and stages of Christian teaching, while Epistles like Hebrews and First John belong to its later period. The Epistles to Timothy and Titus are included in this volume, partly because so many scholars doubt their Pauline au thorship in their present form and, especially, because in any case they re ect the work of Timothy and Titus in ecclesiastical administration more than the theology of the apostle. The first ten Epistles of Paul, reproduced in The Messages of Paul, present to us the apostle's doctrinal system. The Pastorals, whatever view be taken of their authorship, have little bearing upon that system, but deal with relations and conditions which more ap propriately place them in the later group Of New Testa ment writings. Book Description
Excerpt from The Continuity of the Church of England in the Sixteenth Century: Two Discourses; With an Appendix and Notes The following discourses were designed to explain and defend the position of the Church of England, so far as it involves that of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States; and they are published at the instance of several of the author's parishioners, whose partiality to him naturally led them to overrate their importance, and whose wishes a reciprocal feeling on his part rendered it impossible for him to resist. The Appendix and Notes are intended to furnish documentary proof of the chief points made in the discourses, and to unfold, more fully than their limits allowed, some of the principles advanced in them. The purpose of the first discourse is, to show that the Church of England, in renouncing the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Rome, and reforming itself from the errors and corruptions of Popery, underwent no organic change, but retained the ministry, faith and sacraments of Christ, and fulfilled the conditions necessary to their transmission. The resolution of the Church of England to be loyal to the State, and to maintain the Catholic Faith without the abuses and corruptions of later times, was firm and unyielding; and the consequence was, that the Pope of Rome was at length constrained to command his subjects to leave the communion of a Church which he was unable to reclaim to his obedience. Book Description
Excerpt from Sermons and Essays on the Apostolical Age The conclusions of the criticism of that time, have doubtless been, in some points, modified by the re searches and speculations of the intervening period. The adjustment of the natural and the preternatural, the legendary and the historical, may have been altered; the fierce light which has beat on the authorship of the sacred books may have affected, in some respects, the position of the Pastoral Epistles, or the Fourth Gospel, or the Apocalypse. But the general framework in which these conclusions were set forth does not, it is believed, require any essential change. The relative proportions of the elements which formed the main tendencies of the Apostolical Age, are still acknowledged to be the same. Whatever may be alleged against the form of any parts of the history, the moral and spiritual doctrines which it embodies have not been subverted by such criticism. Whatever date may be assigned to the various portions of the present canon of the New Testament, there can be no question that the main influences of the first century after the close of the Life of Christ, were (as the youthful author of these Essays and Sermons, following in the steps of the great German theologians, ventured to suggest, ) those which are connected more or less directly with the names, in varying degrees, of Peter, Paul, and John, of James, and of Apollos.
