Apologetic Works 3
Author: Andrew Fuller
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110420597
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 508
Book Description
When Socinianism was at the height of its power, Andrew Fuller challenged it in its self-professed point of greatest strength --the virtue encouraged by its principles of theistic rationality. Do the extended implications of its principles compare favorably with Calvinism in the development of virtue? Using their own writings and the admissions they make concerning piety and virtue among Socinians, Fuller compared both systems in their tendency to convert profligates to a life of holiness, to convert professed unbelievers, their development of a standard of morality, to encourage love to God, candor and benevolence toward men, encourage humility and charity, promote love for Christ and veneration of Scripture, develop happiness, cheerfulness, gratitude, obedience, and heavenly-mindedness in the followers of the respective systems. If challenged that he is being judgmental and has focused on subjective criteria, Fuller replied that he is merely engaging the Socinians at the place where they have invited investigation. Fuller intended to lay bare the emptiness of the Socinian boast to virtue. The work first was published in 1793.

The Literary Manuscripts and Letters of Hannah More
Author: Nicholas D. Smith
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351886630
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 297
Book Description
The result of extensive archival investigation, this meticulously researched book collects and describes for the first time the extant literary manuscripts and letters of the celebrated Bluestocking writer and Evangelical philanthropist Hannah More (1745-1833). Participating in the ongoing recovery of eighteenth-century women writers, Nicholas D. Smith's survey is an indispensable reference work not only for More scholars but for those researching the careers of many of her contemporaries. Features include an extended narrative analysis of the manuscripts that plots More's participation in the manuscript culture of the period and contextualizes the individual entries in the index; provenance details for the more substantial manuscript holdings in British and North American repositories; and identification of numerous autograph manuscripts and transcripts in public and private collections. More than 1,500 letters in 95 locations in Britain and North America have been inventoried and precise dates and internal locators are supplied when known. More's letters, the majority of which have never been published, are a largely untapped source of primary materials for scholars and students researching such diverse subjects as the literary activities and opinions of the Bluestocking circle, women's conduct and education, publishing and the book trade, the national debate over the abolition of the slave trade, the rise of the Evangelical movement, the conservative reaction to the American and French revolutions, and the Napoleonic wars.

Rejoicing in Lament
Author: J. Todd Billings
Publisher: Brazos Press
ISBN: 1441222901
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 218
Book Description
At the age of thirty-nine, Christian theologian Todd Billings was diagnosed with a rare form of incurable cancer. In the wake of that diagnosis, he began grappling with the hard theological questions we face in the midst of crisis: Why me? Why now? Where is God in all of this? This eloquently written book shares Billings's journey, struggle, and reflections on providence, lament, and life in Christ in light of his illness, moving beyond pat answers toward hope in God's promises. Theologically robust yet eminently practical, it engages the open questions, areas of mystery, and times of disorientation in the Christian life. Billings offers concrete examples through autobiography, cultural commentary, and stories from others, showing how our human stories of joy and grief can be incorporated into the larger biblical story of God's saving work in Christ.

Through Death to Life
Author: Reuen Thomas
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780483620827
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 170
Book Description
Excerpt from Through Death to Life: Discourses on St. Paul's Great Resurrection Chapter The testimonies I have received as to the practical usefulness of these expositions of St. Paul's teachings on the Resurrection have been so many and from persons of such varied experiences and opinions, that I am disposed to congratulate myself upon yielding to the judgments of friends who persuaded me to put them into print. A clergyman of ninety years of age writes me In my long life I have read variously on this great theme. Nothing has so illumined the evening of my life as this book of yours. An agnostic confesses to being agnostic no longer. Bereaved fathers and mothers have conveyed their thanks for new courage and hope. Into the hands of several appointed to die friends have put the book; and the testi mony from dying lips as to its helpfulness has been sacredly delightful. While, if I were treating the theme de now, I should be disposed to do it somewhat differently, yet it is so satisfactory to know that the book has had a mission to hearts that specially needed its truth, that I commend it once again in its original form to the benediction of Him who is the Resurrection and the Life.
