The "Diary" was penned approximately two and a half years after the start of Lee's life prison sentence began, pulled from the source himself as he reflected on what he had done. The book also contains some of Lee's original artwork which places the reader in the exact moment of events as they occurred. Permission to publish the diary was not a simple process. In fact, there had been no mention by Lee that a diary even existed until 2009. It was through years of written correspondence between Mr. Meoli and Lee Malvo (including hundreds of letters), and over 50 hours of telephone calls, that Lee decided it was time to tell his side of the story which has never been told before. The "Diary," which has been fully authorized for release by Malvo, explains the psychological triggers, emotional and traumatic life events that eventually allowed him to become one-half of the D.C. Snipers.

For a month in the fall of 2002, a series of sniper attacks suddenly dominated the headlines in the nation’s capital. Beginning in the Washington suburbs, these crimes eventually stretched over one hundred miles along I-95 to Richmond. More than a thousand law officers would pursue the perpetrators—an enormous number for one case. The number of reporters covering the story, however, was even greater. On the Trail of the D.C. Sniper uses the remarkable events of that October to explore the shifting character of journalism as it entered the twenty-first century and to question how this change in the way news is gathered and reported impacted the events it covered. Ever since the 1990s, school shootings have shocked the public in their brutality, their suddenness, and their inexplicability. While film and literature have played a role in the heated debates about so-called copycat crimes, the growing body of fictionalizations of school shootings has been neglected thus far. However, in a discourse in which the boundaries between fiction and reality are increasingly blurred, this book shows how fiction shapes and structures, challenges and disrupts cultural processes of meaning-making. Hence, for a better understanding of the school shooting phenomenon, the relevance of fiction on all levels of discourse construction requires thorough analysis. This book therefore develops a new approach to the role of fiction for contemporary forms of excessive violence. By combining narrative theory with insights from sociology and other disciplines, it provides the means for apprehending and describing the relevance of fiction for contemporary discourses. Furthermore, it provides exemplary analyses of more specific functions of literary and filmic fictionalizations of school shootings between 2000 and 2016.
