A literature survey revealed that considerable work had been done toward the development of methods of testing for determining the efficiency of concrete mixer performance. However, it was believed that a reliable and suitable test method that could be used both in the laboratory and at field installations did not exist. Therefore, this investigation was undertaken to evaluate various test methods and to develop a satisfactory method for determining whether a concrete mixer is blending the concrete mixture into a homogeneous mass. Tests in accordance with the Corps of Engineers 'Method of Test for Concrete Mixer Performance' (CRD-C 55) were made on a new 16-cu-ft-capacity, laboratory, tilting concrete mixer to determine its suitability for mixing concrete containing aggregate up to 6 in. in size, and structural concrete of high cement content. Three mixtures with aggregates graded up to 6 in., 3 in., and 3/8 in., respectively, were used in the evaluation. Each mixture was evaluated individually. Results indicated that the mixer would blend the constituents into a uniform mixture if the charging and mixing procedures developed in this investigation are used for each type of mixture. (Author).
