Book Description
Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of Gladioli, 1922 Care must be used when cutting the spike so as to leave as much foliage aspossible on the plant. This is necessary if the bulb is intended to be saved and planted another season. Most so called worn out bulbs are from plants from which too much foliage has been removed. The bulbs may be lifted as soon as they show signs of turning brown or have been hit by heavy frost. The tops may be removed at digging time and the bulbs should be allowed to dry before storing away for the winter. Any cool dry place that is suitable for keeping potatoes will do well for bulbs. Book Description
Excerpt from Modest Catalog of One Hundred Choice and Standard Varieties of Gladiolus Bulbs, 1926 When cutting the blooms, always allow about four good leaves to remain on the stalk, as the plant will need these leaves to form a good Vigorous bulb for the next sea son and to develop small bulblets or cormels which should be saved and planted, either with your large bulbs or by themselves the next year. These small bulblets or cor mels are new blood and will always be the same as the old bulb. New varieties are propagated from seeds which form after the flowers bloom. Dig your bulbs when the stalk turns brown, or if the season causes the stalks to keep green late in September or October, dig them when the ground is dry enough to handle nicely. Book Description
Excerpt from 1926 Descriptive Catalog: Gladiolus Aristocrats I guarantee the prices in my list against drop. That is, if I lower any of my prices appreciably after you give your order I will give you enough extra to make up the difference. I have seen too many cases where people have bought bulbs at high prices in the Fall and then later could buy them from the same grower for 25 to 100% less. I know from actual experience that this leaves a bad feeling, a feeling that I don't want my customers to have. This applies more to new and high priced bulbs. Formerly you had to buy new varieties in the Fall and run the risk of a drop in price later or wait till Spring and run the chance of their being sold out. If you want to buy good new varieties, I should advise you not to wait too long as there is a big demand for the good ones. Now you can order early and feel confident that you are going to get your money's worth. If prices should go up as they some times do I will fill the orders I have on hand at the original prices.
