The chapters highlight the security-related aspects of the transition which relate, inter alia, to the aspect of NATO membership of Central and Eastern European states and their political and security relations with Russia. The case studies reveal that the commonly used classification of the political landscape into successful democracies - in Central and Eastern Europe on the one hand and largely autocratic regimes on the other - is too simplistic.
