Vivimos una época de profundos cambios y transformaciones. Muchas realidades e instituciones experimentan modificaciones que afectan a su estructura y modo de funcionamiento. Entre ellas, la Universidad sufre también las consecuencias de este fenómeno. Y, sin embargo, se trata de una de las instituciones más antiguas y con más solera histórica de cuantas conocemos. Su origen se remonta a la Edad Media europea, cuando se fundaron algunas de las más famosas que todavía siguen siéndolo hoy: Paris, Oxford, Cambridge, Bolonia, Alcalá de Henares, Salamanca…. El presente libro pretende ser un análisis detallado sobre los orígenes, principios fundacionales, fines y evolución de esta institución, no sólo porque ella es la responsable de la formación científica superior donde se preparan profesionales competentes en las distintas ramas del saber, sino, también, porque la Universidad ha contribuido de una manera muy destacada a la creación y evolución del mundo cultural en el que nos movemos. Especial atención merece el problema de los vínculos entre tradición y modernidad, esto es, entre la razón de ser de la Universidad tal como está quedó configurada en el momento fundacional (siglos XII-XIII) y la situación presente, con una universidad que en muchos aspectos presenta una fisonomía evidentemente muy distinta. La tesis principal del libro sostiene que, lejos de abandonar los principios y valores fundacionales básicos, la Universidad, si quiere seguir siendo fiel a sí misma, tiene que saber mantenerlos y adaptarlos a las circunstancias actuales. Es una tarea compleja, complicada y difícil, pero, por encima de las dificultades que entraña, constituye un reto que merece la pena afrontar.Jose Luis Brey Blanco es profesor de Derecho Constitucional de la Universidad CEU- San Pablo, doctor en Derecho por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y Diplomado en Derechos Humanos por esta misma Universidad. Es autor de diversas monografías sobre Derecho Constitucional y Ciencia Política como: “Ideologías, transición política en España y Constitución”, “Cristianismo y Política”, “Dogmática Constitucional. La estructura básica del Estado Constitucional” y “Dos modelos de Transición democrática: Portugal y España. Un estudio comparado en el contexto de la historia del constitucionalismo”, además de numerosos artículos y otras publicaciones sobre esta y otras materias en revistas especializadas y libros colectivos. Ha sido fundador y director de la Revista de Cultura “Stromata”. En la actualidad desarrolla su labor de docencia e investigación en la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad CEU-San Pablo.

In the past few decades, much political-philosophical reflection has been dedicated to the realm of "the political." Many of the key figures in contemporary political theory—Jacques Rancière, Alain Badiou, Reinhart Koselleck, Giorgio Agamben, Ernesto Laclau, and Slavoj i ek, among others—have dedicated themselves to explaining power relations, but in many cases they take the concept of the political for granted, as if it were a given, an eternal essence. In An Archaeology of the Political, Elías José Palti argues that the dimension of reality known as the political is not a natural, transhistorical entity. Instead, he claims that the horizon of the political arose in the context of a series of changes that affirmed the power of absolute monarchies in seventeenth-century Europe and was successively reconfigured from this period up to the present. Palti traces this series of redefinitions accompanying alterations in regimes of power, thus describing a genealogy of the concept of the political. "A revolution of forms is a revolution of essentials."-Jos Mart, Cuban intellectual and independence leader. Although the current surge of interest in Cuba has extended to that country's architecture, few know that the most outstanding architectural achievement of the Cuban Revolution stands neglected just outside Havana. The Escuelas Nacionales de Arte (National Art Schools), constructed from 1961 to 1965, were the result of an educational program initiated by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara soon after the Revolution of 1959. The architects they commissioned created an organic complex of brick and terra-cotta Catalan vaulted structures that reflected the optimism and exuberance of the period. The schools attempted to reinvent architecture, just as the Revolution hoped to reinvent society. However, even before construction was completed, the schools fell out of official favor and were subjected to an attack that resulted in their subsequent "disappearance." An ideological campaign branded them politically incorrect, a bourgeois luxury that was not in keeping with the Revolution. The buildings fell into disuse and, abandoned to the jungle, were literally overgrown. Now, almost 40 years later, Cuba is beginning to recognize and reclaim these significant works of architecture. Revolution of Forms investigates the history and politics surrounding the creation of these structures as well as their subsequent abandonment. The text is accompanied by archival photographs, plans, and images of the present condition of these structures.
