Kohlbrugge schrijft over de 13e Psalm: De rechte toepassing hiervan is wel duidelijk. Daarin wordt aangetoond dat het voor degenen die in angst, tegenspoed, wederwaardigheid, in sterke aanvechtingen en in zwarigheden van lichaam en ziel verkeren en daarbij hun hart niet tevreden kunnen stellen, nuttig is, deze Psalm te bidden. Want hier hebben zij niet alleen een voorbeeld hoe zij God hun nood bekend maken en om hulp bij Hem moeten aanhouden, maar zij vinden hier ook zulke woorden, waaruit zij troost voor hun geweten en vrede voor hun geest scheppen en krijgen mogen. Zodat dus deze Psalm niet alleen een klaaglied is, maar ook een onderwijzing en vertroosting. Hoewel de zelfvoldane geesten, de eigengerechtige mensen en die in de wereld hun genoegen hebben; dit niet kunnen verstaan of merken. Maar wie in kruis, lijden, zonde en nood verkeert en Gods hulp ondervonden heeft, of deze nog van harte in het geloof begeert, die ziet, gevoelt en ondervindt wat voor kracht en troost in deze Psalm ligt opgesloten.

Kohlbrugge besluit zijn preken over Psalm 51: "Wie de Naam van Christus noemt, heeft afstand gedaan van alle ongerechtigheid, van alle leugen in de rechterhand. Wie de Heere Jezus begeert, die heeft ook de Geest van heiligmaking begeerd. 'Want zo iemand de Geest van Christus niet heeft, die komt Hem niet toe.' Het zij ons gebed: 'Vergeef ons onze zonden en geef het goede, zo zullen wij offeren de varren onzer lippen.' En wie een arm, begenadigd zondaar is, worde niet moede met David te roepen: 'Doe wel bij Sion naar Uw welbehagen!' Al moest hij ook voor een korte tijd daarom door Gods volk zelf miskend worden; wie zich voor dit volk in de bres en in de diepte werpt, wordt ten laatste voor zijn Heere een gelukkig visser van mensen. En hij ziet ook, als verhoring van zijn gebed, als loon van zijn strijd voor de gerechtigheid, de voorspoed van Jeruzalem, zijn leven lang. Amen."

En daarbij grijpt de Heere Jezus de liefde van de zondares als middel aan om tegelijkertijd Zijn heerlijkheid en eer als Middelaar te openbaren door deze gevolgtrekking te maken: "Daarom zeg Ik u: Vergeven zijn haar zonden, die vele waren, want zij heeft veel liefgehad." Met deze woorden rechtvaardigt de Heere Jezus de zondares voor de mensen en openbaart Hij, wat Hij doen kan uit eigen machtsvolkomenheid, waarvan de Farizeeër echter niets had willen zien. Wat ik hier opmerk is niet iedereen terstond duidelijk, namelijk, dat de Heere Jezus hier de zondares rechtvaardigt uit haar werken, en dat Hij op zulk een wijze Zijn eigen machtsvolkomenheid en heerlijkheid openbaart, dat, - terwijl Hij de zondares rechtvaardigt uit haar werken, - Hij haar de vergeving der zonden, dat is de gerechtigheid voor God zonder werken, schenkt.

Beguinages ('begijnhoven') are unique to the Low Countries. Originally, beguine communities were disseminated over a large area comprising the northern and southern Low Countries, northern France, and parts of present-day Germany and Switzerland. The typical 'court' beguinages, however, are represented most strongly in the southern Low Countries, where a considerable number of them still exist. On account of their historical, architectural, and socio-religious value, a selection of thirteen beguinages was recognized as World Heritage by Unesco in 1998. Only recently, research has paid closer attention to the material culture of beguinage life, including literacy and book culture among beguines. Beguinae in cantu instructae focuses on another 'new' aspect of this musical culture, and for the first time describes and studies the sources of the beguines' musical life. The volume fills a void in current musicology and beguine scholarship, sketching the previously unassessed quality, quantity, stylistic diversity, and historical and geographical dissemination of the repertory. On the one hand, a number of source studies yield a deeper insight into several aspects of the preserved patrimony, which proves to be both rich and diverse. The 'story behind the music' provides the context necessary for a full understanding of the sources. On the other hand, this book aims at stimulating further exploration of the music by providing a repertory of all music manuscripts and prints that have been found thus far. Beguinae in cantu instructae will inform the general reader on new aspects of beguine life; furthermore, it will provide amateur and professional musicians with new material (from the Middle Ages to the late 18th century) and historians and musicologists with a basis for further study and research.

Catastrophes and crises are exceptions. They are disruptions of order. In various ways and to different degrees, they change and subvert what we regard as normal. They may occur on a personal level in the form of traumatic or stressful situations, on a social level in the form of unstable political, financial or religious situations, or on a global level in the form of environmental states of emergency.
