Book Description
A murder in a crowded Broadway theater presents a full house of suspects—the first in this classic mystery series starring Ellery Queen! Despite the dismal Broadway season, Gunplay continues to draw crowds. A gangland spectacle, it’s packed to the gills with action, explosions, and gunfire. In fact, Gunplay is so loud that no one notices the killing of Monte Field. In a sold-out theater, Field is found dead partway through the second act, surrounded by empty seats. The police hold the crowd and call for the one man who can untangle this daring murder: Inspector Richard Queen. With the help of his son Ellery, a bibliophile and novelist whose imagination can solve any crime, the Inspector attacks this seemingly impenetrable mystery. Anyone in the theater could have killed the unscrupulous lawyer, and several had the motive. Only Ellery Queen, in his debut novel, can decipher the clue of the dead man’s missing top hat.

A Narrative of the Life of David Crockett of the State of Tennessee
Author: Davy Crockett
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 9780803263253
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 276
Book Description
Even as a pup, Davy Crockett "always delighted to be in the very thickest of danger." In his own inimitable style, he describes his earliest days in Tennessee, his two marriages, his career as an Indian fighter, his bear hunts, and his electioneering. His reputation as a b'ar hunter (he killed 105 in one season) sent him to Congress, and he was voted in and out as the price of cotton (and his relations with the Jacksonians) rose and fell. In 1834, when this autobiography appeared, Davy Crockett was already a folk hero with an eye on the White House. But a year later he would lose his seat in Congress and turn toward Texas and, ultimately, the Alamo.

The Battle of the Aleutians
Author: Dashiell Hammett
Publisher: Loose Cannon
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 50
Book Description
Japanese troops on U.S. soil June 6th 1942, Japanese troops invade and occupy Kiska in the Aleutian island chain only 3 days after their bombing raids on Dutch Harbor. A day later they also occupy Attu. The Aleutians campaign would rage on both sea and land for another 13 months before Japan finally withdrew. Historians believe Japan wished to put America on the defensive in the Pacific after the Pearl Harbor attack, and used this move as a distraction to split the efforts of the then still reeling U.S. Navy. With increasing public fears of more Japanese attacks on the Mainland or West Coast, the War Department felt it would be an important propaganda tool to create an informational booklet about the Alaskan battles, for morale purposes on the Home Front. 50-year-old well-known novelist, Dashiell Hammett, of detective-fiction fame, had enlisted in the Army and was assigned to Adak island in 1943. While there he edited the base newspaper, and also was a writer of this Army booklet entitled, “The Battle for the Aleutians”. He and his other contributors received commendations for this work. He served on Adak until the summer of 1945. Surprisingly heavy on facts and light on propaganda for this era. Filled with clear maps of the major actions/battles, this rare booklet would make a great reference/teaching aid for middle grade or high school history courses.

At the Stroke of Midnight
Author: John K. Butler
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781886937253
Category : Comics & Graphic Novels
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
In the 1930s and '40s, he wrote about the otherworldly landscape of Southern California with a tough elegance themes bordered on poetry, driving his tarnished but noble knight through a neon-lit neverland. After a few years, a call from Hollywood sprung him from the pulpwood pages of the detective-fiction magazines and onto a movie lot, where he began crafting features that would light up the screens during Tinsletown's golden age. It wasn't Raymond Chandler. It was Chandler's compadre from the pages of Black Mask and Dime Detective magazines, John K. Butler, whose star shone as brightly as Chandler's in the pages of the pulps. Chandler went on to movies and best-selling novels; Butler stayed in the picture business, his work never reaching book form. Until now.
