Book Description
The traditional dances of Merrie England, that once earned us the name of 'the dancing English', were all but lost under the soot and grime of the Industrial Revolution. Only the devoted labours and patient research of Cecil Sharp saved them from extinction: Here and there in quiet corners of the countryside he found old men who still remembered the delightful dances of their youth, and this 'timely salvage', as Maud Karpeles calls it, resulted in the folkdance revival that is at once his handiwork and his memorial. In Wales, too, time has wrought ill with the folk traditions. The music of the crwth is heard, alas, no more, but the Welsh dances are being revived, and can now be seen in their traditional setting at the Eisteddfodau and in the country villages. Miss Karpeles, who worked with Sharp for many years and who is Honorary Secretary of the International Folk Music Council, writes with authority on English folk dancing; Mrs. Blake is President of the Welsh Folk Dnace Society. Detailed descriptions (with music) of four selected dances, and four costume plates in full colour make this book one that will gladden the heart of all who love the dance and the countryside.

Book Description
Dancing in the English style explores the development, experience, and cultural representation of popular dance in Britain from the end of the First World War to the early 1950s. It describes the rise of modern ballroom dancing as Britain's predominant popular style, as well as the opening of hundreds of affordable dancing schools and purpose-built dance halls. It focuses in particular on the relationship between the dance profession and dance hall industry and the consumers who formed the dancing public. Together these groups negotiated the creation of a 'national' dancing style, which constructed, circulated, and commodified ideas about national identity. At the same time, the book emphasizes the global, exploring the impact of international cultural products on national identity construction, the complexities of Americanisation, and Britain's place in a transnational system of production and consumption that forged the dances of the Jazz Age.

Book Description
'Remarkably intimate... Full and revealing... Princesses opens an invaluable new window into the often troubled private world of these royal women' LA Times 'Riveting and wonderfully detailed....Thanks to Flora Fraser's new book, George III's daughters can step out of the shadows of history and take their rightful places with the rest of the House of Hanover' Washington Times Drawing on their extraordinary private correspondence, acclaimed biographer Flora Fraser gives voice to the daughters of 'Mad' King George III. Six handsome, accomplished, extremely well-educated women: Princess Royal, the eldest, constantly at odds with her mother; home-loving, family-minded Augusta; plump Elizabeth, a gifted amateur artist; Mary the bland beauty of the family; Sophia, emotional and prone to take refuge in illness; and Amelia, 'the most turbulent and tempestuous of all the princesses.' In this sumptuous group portrait, Fraser takes us into the heart of the British Royal family during the tumultuous period of the American and French revolutions. Never before has the historical searchlight been turned with such sympathy and acuity on George III and his family.

Book Description
In these essays, dancers and scholars from around the world carefully consider the transformation of an improvised folk form from North Africa and the Middle East into a popular global dance practice. They explore the differences between the solo improvisational forms of North Africa and the Middle East, often referred to as raqs sharki, which are part of family celebrations, and the numerous globalized versions of this dance form, belly dance, derived from the movement vocabulary of North Africa and the Middle East but with a variety of performance styles distinct from its site of origin. Local versions of belly dance have grown and changed along with the role that dance plays in the community. The global evolution of belly dance is an inspiring example of the interplay of imagination, the internet and the social forces of local communities.
