Among the numerous discursive carriers through which translations come into being, are channeled and gain readership, translation anthologies and collections have so far received little attention among translation scholars: either they are let aside as almost ungraspable categories, astride editing and translating, mixing in most variable ways authors, genres, languages or cultures, or are taken as convenient but rather meaningless groupings of single translations. This volume takes a new stand, makes a plea to consider translation anthologies and collections at face value and offers an extensive discussion about the more salient aspects of translation anthologies and collections: their complex discursive properties, their manifold roles in canonization processes and in strategies of cultural censorship. It brings together translation scholars with different backgrounds, both theoretical and historical, and covering a wide array of European cultural areas and linguistic traditions. This book is the first major study of one of Spain's most celebrated younger novelists, Belén Gopegui, whose work stands apart from other writers of her generation for its uncompromising focus on the social function of literature. Gopegui's social commitments find expression in her concern for solidarity and collective projects. These become more radical over time in response to a disenchantment with the evolution of the left in Spain and to the global impact of the capitalist economic system, giving rise to increasingly interventionist narrative strategies. The core theme of solidarity is explored in relation to the collective experience of Spain's largely consensualdemocratic transition and to the apparent erosion of collective goals in post-transition society. Gopegui's discourse of solidarity is examined through engagement with theorists of advanced modernity, including Ulrich Beck's 'risksociety' model and various contemporary reflections on the concept of solidarity. Centred on Gopegui's first four novels, the study situates analysis of these within the perspective of her later works and illuminates her artisticand intellectual trajectory by drawing on an extensive array of her non-fiction writings and personal interviews, one of which is published here for the first time. This volume provides a detailed description of the literary contact between Graham Greene and Franco’s Spain. Part I describes the most significant political events that affected the Spanish book industry under this regime, with the first chapter offering an account of the methods of control created to exercise authoritative influence over the cultural scene. Part II explores critical studies of Greene’s artistic output in Franco’s Spain, and the second chapter investigates literary critics’ evaluations of the author as published in the national press, magazines and journals, as well as in the prologues, introductions and prefaces to his books. Parts III and IV study the role played by the book industry in the reception of the writer in Spain, as well as the obstacles it faced at the censorship office. Accordingly, chapters three to six provide the names of the publishers and booksellers who attempted to disseminate his work throughout the country. Using the censorship files, these chapters measure with great precision publishers’ interest in Greene’s works, and establish the power Franco’s censorship wielded over the reception of his literature in Spain. The final section of the book brings together a number of significant conclusions developed throughout this study. As such, Graham Greene’s Narrative in Spain provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of the roles played by national literary criticism and the book industry in the reception of the author’s works in Franco's Spain, as well as of the influence exerted by the regime throughout the whole publishing process.
