Data was collected from 110 students at a mid-western university. Participants were randomly selected to be in the same- or diverse-cultural dyad teams, and they are asked to work on a personnel selection task through a computer-mediated communication tool. It was hypothesized that cultural intelligence and collective efficacy would be positively correlated with virtual team performance and satisfaction. Another hypothesis was that collective efficacy would mediate the relationship between cultural intelligence and diverse virtual team performance and satisfaction. It was also hypothesized that the same results would be found for both diverse- and single-cultural teams. Foreign language skill and international traveling experience were expected to link to cultural intelligence. Results revealed that collective efficacy was weakly correlated with decision outcome satisfaction. Overall and meta-cognitive cultural intelligence were correlated with decision outcome satisfaction only in the diverse-cultural teams. Foreign language skill and traveling experience were found to weakly predict cultural intelligence. Implications and future directions are also discussed.

These findings serve to demonstrate that team performance can be enhanced through intercultural trainings corresponding to different factors of CQ, which hence, serve as a possible starting point for improved international cooperation. The trend of technological development and increasing competition within the global economy requires more profound answers to the question of why some people are more effective in intercultural environments than others. Therefore, research about cultural intelligence (CQ), defined as the ability to cope in intercultural settings, has received increasing attention for the last years. The multidimensional construct of CQ, introduced in 2003 by Earley and Ang, analyses CQ from four different angles: Metacognitive CQ focuses on the awareness of other cultures, while cognitive CQ revolves around adaptive cultural standards. Motivational CQ addresses the interest in meeting other cultures. Finally, behavioral CQ refers to the intuitive behavior of people within intercultural interactions. To tighten the gap of knowledge within this field of research this study is aimed at elucidating the relation between the single factors of CQ and team performance, measured on three indicators. Moreover, the moderating effect of virtuality and team identification on this relation should be examined, since international teams are often characterized by a virtual communication and less cohesion. This should give further insights on how to correctly cope with the increasing local flexibility in the business environment.

Virtual teams are a valuable resource for many organizations. As the utilization of distributed teams by organizations increases, so does the need to better understand their mechanisms and ultimate performance. While numerous theoretical frameworks have been employed by researchers interested in the performance of virtual teams, one framework that has not been applied is social cognitive theory (SCT). The failure to apply SCT in virtual team research is regrettable as the triadic reciprocal relationship of the person, the environment, and the behavior may provide a theoretical framework broad enough to encompass many of the previously established virtual team success factors, allowing for the development of a more comprehensive model of virtual team performance. Central to the person component of the SCT framework is the concept of collective efficacy---or a belief in a team's collective abilities---which can be used as a centerpiece in such a model of virtual team performance. In this research, a measure of virtual team efficacy---a domain specific measure of collective efficacy---is validated using established psychometric and instrument validation procedures. A conceptual model is then proposed relating virtual team efficacy to factors known to influence virtual team performance. A theoretically developed research model of virtual team efficacy is also developed and tested. At the group level of analysis, over 46% of the variance in actual performance was accounted for. In addition, virtual team efficacy was found to exert a significant positive influence on the established virtual team success factors of trust and communication. These findings reveal that the concept of virtual team efficacy is an important component missing from many studies of virtual team performance.
