Book Description
The title of the book Crash on J Bird Road is basically the story of my best friend and his tumultuous journey through life. It was a journey that eventually led to his ultimate demise. I wanted to let the reader know that up front because even though his story is one worth telling, this book is really about me, my politics and certain events that shaped my thinking. I have intertwined my best friends story with my life story throughout this book. Hopefully, you will understand, by the end, how his journey, and my own, connect to form the thought process I have toward life as I now see it. You see, I am a Black Republican living in the Deep South. There is not many of us in this country but the ones most of us see do not resemble myself. I am a long haired hippie that wears baggy clothes and only has one suit that I wear to funerals and weddings. I will probably wear it to my funeral. My main reasoning for writing this book is to let the world know that all Republicans are not the same and we all have different reasons why that party is our choice. We all dont believe in the same things nor have identical morals. And lastly, but most importantly, I want everyone to know we are NOT all Conservatives. In my case, the choice to be a Republican is a very controversial one, as you can imagine. It is not only controversial to my family but to society as a whole. Black people are supposed to be Democrats. ALL black people. This book is not about race or money or anything of that nature. It mainly focuses on the dangers of dependency and it gives two completely different versions of how too much of it can be a detriment to ones self and ones life as a whole. It is also about the dangers of not paying attention and not finding the reasons of why we do the things we do as human beings. My life has been one long journey of hustling and finding a way to make it in this world NOT doing things by the book. And as you will read, you will see that I made it in a very unorthodox fashion.

The Graphic Canon, Vol. 3
Author: Russ Kick
Publisher: Seven Stories Press
ISBN: 1609807065
Category : Comics & Graphic Novels
Languages : en
Pages : 578
Book Description
NOW A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Publisher's Weekly "Best Summer Books of 2013" The Daily Beast's "Brainy Summer Beach Reads" The classic literary canon meets the comics artists, illustrators, and other artists who have remade reading in Russ Kick's magisterial, three-volume, full-color The Graphic Canon, volumes 1, 2, and 3. Volume 3 brings to life the literature of the end of the 20th century and the start of the 21st, including a Sherlock Holmes mystery, an H.G. Wells story, an illustrated guide to the Beat writers, a one-act play from Zora Neale Hurston, a disturbing meditation on Naked Lunch, Rilke's soul-stirring Letters to a Young Poet, Anaïs Nin's diaries, the visions of Black Elk, the heroin classic The Man With the Golden Arm (published four years before William Burroughs' Junky), and the postmodernism of Thomas Pynchon, David Foster Wallace, Kathy Acker, Raymond Carver, and Donald Barthelme. The towering works of modernism are here--T.S. Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and "The Waste Land," Yeats's "The Second Coming" done as a magazine spread, Heart of Darkness, stories from Kafka, The Voyage Out by Virginia Woolf, James Joyce's masterpiece, Ulysses, and his short story "Araby" from Dubliners, rare early work from Faulkner and Hemingway (by artists who have drawn for Marvel), and poems by Gertrude Stein and Edna St. Vincent Millay. You'll also find original comic versions of short stories by W. Somerset Maugham, Flannery O'Connor, and Saki (manga style), plus adaptations of Lolita (and everyone said it couldn't be done!), The Age of Innocence, Siddhartha and Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse, "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" by Langston Hughes, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Last Exit to Brooklyn, J.G. Ballard's Crash, and photo-dioramas for Animal Farm and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Feast your eyes on new full-page illustrations for 1984, Brave New World, Waiting for Godot, One Hundred Years of Solitude,The Bell Jar, On the Road, Lord of the Flies, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, and three Borges stories. Robert Crumb's rarely seen adaptation of Nausea captures Sartre's existential dread. Dame Darcy illustrates Cormac McCarthy's masterpiece, Blood Meridian, universally considered one of the most brutal novels ever written and long regarded as unfilmable by Hollywood. Tara Seibel, the only female artist involved with the Harvey Pekar Project, turns in an exquisite series of illustrations for The Great Gatsby. And then there's the moment we've been waiting for: the first graphic adaptation from Kurt Vonnegut's masterwork, Slaughterhouse-Five. Among many other gems.

Tinicum & Eastwick
Author: Will Caverly
Publisher: Brookline Books
ISBN: 1955041156
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
When plans to overhaul Southwest Philadelphia in the 1950s scheduled both the integrated neighborhood of Eastwick and the ecologically valuable Tinicum marshes to be razed, two grassroots movements took up the cause—battling eminent domain in the name of environmental conservation and economic injustice. In the 1950s, city planners eager to change the face of Philadelphia had designs on the city’s southwest. They planned to raze the integrated neighborhood of Eastwick and level the ecologically valuable Tinicum marshlands to make room for a new “city within a city.” In response, two grassroots movements began a resistance that spanned decades—battling eminent domain in the name of environmental conservation and economic injustice. The Eastwick neighborhood’s resistance to the project was racially diverse and working class in nature. Led by housewives, they went toe to toe with a government bureaucracy hungry for progress. As Eastwick rallied to defend itself, a parallel grassroots effort by bird watchers desperately worked to save the embattled Tinicum marshes. These unspoiled remains of Pennsylvania’s last freshwater tidal marsh were home to hundreds of threatened species of wildlife. Amid protest marches and bomb threats, political intrigue and outrage, a question emerged that would forever influence the region. Who deserves a home: wildlife or human beings? Through oral history and exhaustive research, Tinicum & Eastwick documents one of the most egregious civil-rights violations in Pennsylvania history, as well as one of the state’s greatest environmental triumphs. Author Will Caverly confronts the intersection of eminent domain and environment, told through the struggles everyday residents of Southeastern Pennsylvania endured to pursue justice.
