Over past few years, supply chain coordination has been widely studied and numerous practitioners and researchers proposed many models on this field. Although many previous studies addressed channel competition considering a scenario with an exclusive retailer with only one producer’s brand, in real world the retailers sell various products with different brands. This study was to analyze the relation between two suppliers and a common retailer by taking various degree of product sustainability into account. The market is considered to be duopoly. This thesis describes modifying and implementation of a supply chain coordinator tool in order to enhance the profit earned by any of the parties involved in this supply chain. In this thesis we present a cooperation and collaboration model in a supply chain consisting of two suppliers with a common retailer. We establish the conditions for cooperation in such scenario with popular supply chain contracts. Even though other methods have been reviewed under various scenarios, we confine our interest to apply a coordinating contract and analyse the results. The type of the contract that can coordinate the supply chain is debatable and it needs to be analyzed depending on the limitations. The methodological approach taken in this study is modifying a contract in order to coordinate the supply chain and leads to better off for all parties. First we consider the classical model then the whole sale price contract is applied. Later in order to enable the supply chain coordination, facility sharing contract and franchise contract have been modified and implemented. Finally by illustrating the results of implementing each contract, a framework is presented. In this study the linear demand function is used because of tractability in providing analytical results while in real case the nonlinear demand function is widely used.

In recent years, online retailers have not only acted as product resellers, a format commonly referred to as reselling; but also started to serve as online marketplaces for suppliers to directly access their customers and charge a proportion fee for providing this access, a format commonly referred to as agency selling. This paper studies the incentive for vertical information sharing in an e-commerce supply chain under different selling formats: Reselling, agency selling, and hybrid. We consider an e-commerce supply chain consisting of two suppliers and a common online retailer, with the suppliers or the retailer and one of the suppliers engaging in Bertrand or Cournot competition. Our analysis shows that the retailer's incentive to share information strongly depends on the selection of selling modes. Under pure reselling or pure agency selling mode, no matter whether the associated parties engage in Bertand or Cournot competition, the retailer has no or has an incentive to voluntarily share demand information. However, we find that hybrid mode critically moderates this possibility. Specifically, for Bertrand competi-tion, the retailer is willing to disclose information to the suppliers only if the proportional fee is low but the competition intensity is high, or the proportional fee is sufficiently high. Never-theless, for Cournot competition, the retailer has an incentive to share information only if the competition intensity is low but the proportional fee is high, which stands in sharp contrast to Bertrand competition. The intuition behind these results hinges on the strategic interactions of the proportional fee and the competition intensity on ex-ante profits of all parties in the supply chain. Moreover, when the retailer chooses to disclose demand information under hybrid mode, we find that not only the retailer but also the suppliers can benefit from sharing infor-mation; and the value improvement of the retailer becomes higher if the competition intensity increases (decreases) under Bertrand (Cournot) competition. Our findings not only complement the emerging online marketplace and the rich information sharing literature but also provide practical implications for online retailers to choose information-sharing strategies under different selling formats and competition behaviors.

We study contracts between a single retailer and multiple suppliers of two substitutable products, where suppliers have fixed capacities and present the retailer cost contracts for their supplies. After observing the contracts, the retailer decides how much capacity to purchase from each supplier, to maximize profits from the purchased capacity from the suppliers plus his possessed inventory (endowment). This is modeled as a noncooperative, nonzero-sum game, where suppliers, or principals, move simultaneously as leaders and the retailer, the common agent, is the sole follower. We are interested in the form of the contracts in equilibrium, their effect on the total supply chain profit, and how the profit is split between the suppliers and the retailer. Under mild assumptions, we characterize the set of all equilibrium contracts and discuss all-unit and marginal-unit quantity discounts as special cases. We also show that the supply chain is coordinated in equilibrium with a unique profit split between the retailer and the suppliers. Each supplier's profit is equal to the marginal contribution of her capacity to supply chain profits in equilibrium. The retailer's profit is equal to the total revenue collected from the market minus the payments to the suppliers and the associated sales costs.

Supply chain management is more than a movement advocated by a few pioneers today. It is a strategic as well as operational revolution for business operations. Better understanding of the underlying principles of supply chain scenarios helps the widely acceptance that coordination along supply chain links can achieve a win-win situation. In the meanwhile, the penetration of Internet and information technology into every corner of our life enables a large scale of interaction and cooperation between multiple business units and/or end consumers. Supply chain management has gone beyond the early stage when basic cases are discussed for pedagogical purpose. More realistic application scenarios are yet to be identified and investigated. Supply chain performance can be affected by a large set of factors. A variety of supply chain scenarios are in operation. This dissertation is intended to identify a number of typical application scenarios and focus on decision issues integrating pricing, sourcing, product attributes, evolving partnerships between firms. It consists of three manuscripts to be submitted for journal publication. The first paper studies the coordination of pricing and sourcing in two scenarios where multiple suppliers and multiple retail channels are involved. This study investigates the cross price effects between retail channels on the overall profitability. In addition to the analytical analysis, a number of numerical experiments are conducted to investigate realistic issues decision makers may encounter. The second paper studies a supply chain in which a manufacturer sells a configurable product through a retailer. We take the configurable product as a parameterized product and examine the impact of such a feature decision on equilibrium between the manufacturer and the retailer. The analysis considers three different cost functions: (1) linear cost function, (2) quadratic cost function and (3) exponential cost function and examines how the cost functions affect the optimal solutions. The third paper presents a novel framework in which supply chain structure evolves from one stage to the next in terms of changing memberships and business partnerships between members. All of the research work so far on supply chain coordination assumes a static supply chain structure, which remains the same throughout the sequence of events. In reality, however, supply chain memberships and the partnerships between those member firms are not all established at one time and the supply chain structure is subject to evolution. Firms may join or leave a supply chain network and the partnerships between two firms may change as well. Among a large variety of possible evolving scenarios, this research focuses on a case in which a second manufacturer joins a supply chain initially established with one manufacturer and one retailer. The supply chain evolves from the stage with one partnership to the next stage with two partnerships. The two partnerships are established one after another on two competing and differentiated products. Compatibility between demand models in two stages are established. Based on the analytical non-closed form solution, a number of numerical experiments are developed to demonstrate the impact of the introduction of a competing product on the optimal solution of product one. This dissertation conducts a series of exploratory research works on supply chain coordination. It considers coordination not only between multiple players but having multiple strategies involved. It considers products specified with not only price but configurable attributes. It puts forward a novel framework, evolving supply chain, in contrast to static supply chain, the typical research subject in the literature. This dissertation provides a set of insightful results, which help better understand the underlying coordination mechanism and help make wise decisions as needed.
