Book Description
What’s the best way to determine exposure? How do you know which settings to use for various lighting scenarios? Why does exposure differ for digital photography versus film photography? In this ebook, photographer Andrew S. Gibson answers these questions and more, showing how to use the histogram to obtain optimum exposure in your images. Going beyond simply focusing on how to achieve the “right” exposure for a given situation, he examines how the question of exposure is as open to creative interpretation as any other aspect of photography. By the end of this guide, you’ll understand how to take a photo that is correctly exposed using the tools provided by your DSLR camera. In this updated edition, he provides in-depth coverage of using Manual mode, including how to use Live View with a filter to make adjustments to composition and focus, and using manual lens attachments to ensure proper metering for correct exposure. In addition, he provides greatly expanded coverage of three key scenarios: the subject brightness matches the dynamic range of the sensor; the subject brightness is less than the dynamic range of the sensor; and the subject brightness is greater than the dynamic range of the sensor. This coverage includes details on how to use diffusers, portable flash, reflectors–and much more.

Book Description
This work by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was translated into English in 1840 by Sir Charles Eastlake (1793-1865), painter and later keeper of the National Gallery. Goethe's 1810 work was rejected by many contemporary scientists because it appeared to contradict the physical laws laid down by Newton. However, its focus on the human perception of the colour spectrum, as opposed to the observable optical phenomenon, was attractive to, and influential upon, artists and philosophers. As Eastlake says in his preface, the work's dismissal on scientific grounds had caused 'a well-arranged mass of observations and experiments, many of which are important and interesting', to be overlooked. Eastlake also puts Goethe's work into its aesthetic and scientific context and describes its original reception. His clear translation of Goethe's observations and experiments on colour and light will appeal to anyone interested in our responses to art.

Book Description
Learning to work with light is an important milestone in every photographer’s career, and the ability to craft light to fit your vision for an image is a skill that cannot be overrated. Most often, that crafting of light is spoken of in terms of the quality and quantity of light. But there is an important, third component of light that heavily influences the final look of the image: the color of light. In Chroma: A Photographer’s Guide to Lighting with Color, photographer Nick Fancher helps you elevate your game when it comes to introducing the bold, creative, and intentional use of color into your work.

Whether you’re using a high-powered strobe or a small hotshoe flash, Chroma is for you. Nick begins with a discussion of color theory, gels, and white balance, then examines how to determine which colors complement your subject matter (whether that’s people or products). He moves on to cover topics such as:

  • Balancing, mixing, and overpowering ambient light with artificial light
  • Layering colors for unique color combinations
  • Mixing hard and soft light to achieve extremely rich color
  • Lighting detail and texture
  • Modifier options, such as ring flash, snoots, barn doors, softboxes, and filters
  • Gobos to control the light
  • Post-processing for vibrant, powerful colors
  • How (and why) to light with color, even when the end goal is a black and white image

Illustrated throughout with innovative and expressive imagery, Chroma also includes behind-the-scenes photos, lighting diagrams, and Lightroom settings so you can follow along from the initial concept through to the final edit.
